TOPIC: Trout Information

Trout Information 1 year, 8 months ago #106014

Was searching around on the net and came across this document. Some interest reading on trout if anyone is keen and wants to kill some time

www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/mp/mp156/fmp156.pdf
Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths.

The initial findings in the trout review by Wayne Fulton found that Trout stocking in the streams of SA should continue as it had in previous years.Unfortunately these findings were challenged by a number of anti trout green groups quoting evidence from interstate and overseas literature.SAFFA challenged some of these findings and fought hard to continue stocking the streams so that future generations could continue to enjoy trout angling.SAFFA is the only self funded acclimatisation society responsible for stocking the waterways a whole state,in Australia.
The end result was that many streams were lost from the SAFFA stocking Permit.SAFFA are now only permitted to sock three southern and three northern streams.
Since the trout review SAFFA has suffered a hatchery break in with all of that years fry being killed by radicals.Due to the hard work of members and generosity of Gaden hatchery in NSW,disease free certified fry were swimming in our hatchery within 36 hrs and stocking was carried out as normal although slightly later. There was also an attempt to vandalise tooperang trout farm.
PIRSA have commissioned an independent study on the interaction of trout and native fish in the MT lofty ranges in readiness for the next trout review in 2014.No such study has ever been carried out in SA and people with a known anti trout bias were turned down for the job.We wait with baited breath for the outcome.
There is anecdotal evidence that individuals studying native fish in Adelaide surrounds ,utilising electrofishers routinely kill every trout they encounter even though there are size limits of 28 cm.
The current legal status of trout is "desirable introduced species".
If you enjoy trout angling it is worth sending a friendly letter of support to PIRSA before the next trout review.Remember PIRSA have permitted trout stocking for years and are nuetral. The green groups are very anti trout. Some of these people hate anything non native.Makes you wonder what they eat and what they wear?
There is a national lobby group called "The Australian Trout Foundation"that are fighting for the existence of trout .It is worth joining to offer your support.
There are many more self sustaining populations of trout in SA than those mentioned by Wayne Fulton in the trout review, remember SAFFA provided Wayne with much of his info. The drought has seen many of these populations die with no chance of return as SAFFA is no longer permitted to stock streams where trout once spawned annually. These populations are gone forever due to extreme drought, water extraction, fertilizer runoff and stream degradation due to cattle.
These same problems have impacted the small native fish populations, not trout introduction. No where is the problem of redfin population explosion, when trout are removed, mentioned.
The waterways of SA have changed forever and can not be reversed. The removal of trout may have a negative impact as redfin populations explode.
The greenies never mention carp ,goldfish ,Gambusia or redfin as they can do nothing about them. They can stop trout stocking so they go after them tooth and nail. You know the old cliche "don't take the fun out of funding".
SAFFA members regularly encounter all the so called endangered native fish co existing with trout where water quality allows.I have found all the common gudgeons and galaxias along with the supposedly endangered Galaxia Olidus and Pygmy Perch in water inhabited by trout in rivers where they are allegedly extinct.
If you love trout fishing join "the Australian trout foundation"

i'm not one of the fanatic greenies that you mentioned but I would like to see the stocking of native sportsfish and as much as possible the eradication or reduction of non native pest species like spotted carp and redfin

Trouble is, the only place where 'native sportfish' are native are in the Murray and few others. Callop and silvers aren't any more indigenous to small streams than trout.

The whole greenie arguement is pretty flawed a few places, apparently native gudgeons/galaxias have adapted to introduced species by living in skinner waters, where trout/redfin aren't.

The idea of illegally electro fishing a stream to get rid of all the trout is bull , it wrecks the hard work and financial efforts that go into stocking these creeks.

Wonder how good it is for any fish to be stunned by electricity? Do the natives even survive?

Callop, silvers, catties and cod all thrive in small streams they may not get large like they do in dams and large rivers but they definately survive better than trout because they cope with the conditions better being native fish.

Electrofishing has been done for many years and with the right people doing it the survival rates are very high.

Just like everything else SA is well behind the other states with their approach to introduced species.
I know a lot of guys here fish for trout and reddies and thats fine but when you think about what we are missing out on it's a bit of a shame.

soon vic will open up upland rivers for anglers to target Trout cod which is an iconic species that has far superior fighting qualities than trout and their native and cost less to look after because they survive and thrive and don't need to be restocked every year.
thats just 1 example of the good work thats happening elsewhere that could be done in SA with different species. SA is already 10 years behind on this one do we really want to be 30 years behind?

Most of the southern streams drain into the Murray providing opportunity for native fish to migrate up them. The reason they don't is simple ,the streams are unsuitable for large Murray darling fish. These streams don't have the flood cycle required for these fish to breed. Trout survive mostly on a diet of insects.Imagine the impact on the allegedly endangered small native species if large predatory Murray darling basin fish were introduced into the tiny pools of the Souther Fluerieau Streams.
It is Ludicrous to suggest that trout pull harder than trout of the same size.Where did you obtain that info from?
Victoria classifies its streams into three categories native ,mixed and Salmonid depending on suitability. They would classify our streams as salmonid. We simply don't have as much water to choose from as VIC.
Trout do not require stocking annually.Browns survive up to about seven years and rainbows about five in SA streams and spawn when conditions are favorable.Natives do not breed in the southern streams and are outgrowing the habitat in the Broughton.
If you think that non indigenous species are undesirable then you need to get rid of dogs ,cats, cattle ,sheep etc etc.In fact unless you are indigenous then I suggest that you and all other fishos are undesirable introduced species and have to go as well!!Or are you alone going to decide what species of introdced species are acceptable.
Callop are plentiful in the broughton and I did catch one years ago. However ask any angler who frequents the Broughton if they provide sport and the answer is no as almost none are caught. They are simply to difficult for anyone.
Be specific as to what locations you think are suitable for these native sportfish? Have you had a good look at our streams?

Rollcast, due to the murray being in such a shitty state in SA there isn't a native populatiion of small fish to move up those streams.poor management being the main problem.
The Troutcod example I gave is based on my own experience and anyone that has been lucky enough to have caught one. note trout cod are not a salmonoid.

i'm not saying that every stream would be suitable for the introduction of natives but would it hurt for a handfull to be native dominated streams?for a little balance.

I worked at a troutfarm in vic so I know about the lifecycle ect my point was that trout require far more stocking enhancment meaning more $$$.

I'm definately not a trout hater and i like my dogs sheep and cows :)everything has it's place

i'm sure SA will work it out eventually

might have to agree to disagree on this one Rollcast

Also Pirahna I think trout Cod are a beautiful fish and hope that like all Australian native fish that they are assured a future where habitat is suitable (and I know they are not a salmonid)

Re:Trout Information 1 year, 8 months ago #106183

theres creeks with fish in them in our hills who would have thought with state of our water an droughts an draconian ancient conservation laws im surprised theres any fish at all let alone what kind of speices it is i think that theres to much arguing in this state an there needs to be a UNITED!! front to lobby parliment and organisations that as recreational fishos we are no longer happy with the current system and what change and to come in line with all other states or be the leading state that are dodgy loser priemer keeps stating that we are (who aint even in the country to sort out our shit)

a united front an things will change have the same bickering an it will be same s*** different day

cheers matt

Yes Matt you are right. As a Past SAFFA president I have recently had some very constructive conversations with TonyB from SAFWAA regarding SARFAC.
SAFFA are already a SARFAC member and have representatives on the board.SAFWAA have recently voiced an interest in joining SARFAC.
SARFAC are the peak recreational fishing lobbying group in the state and work for all fishos.Having SAFWAA onboard is a great step forward.
SARFAc and SAFFA are responsible for the opening of South Para for recreational fishing.SARFAC are currently negotiating with SAWater opening up more of SA reservoirs. The current negotiations are more positive than any in the past.
SAFFA provided a long list of native and introduced species suitable for stocking in SA reservoirs as part of the anglers wish list for SARFAC to use as an election issue at the last election. No point in gaining access without stocking
SAFFA has a past president on the board of SARFAC and this gent has been fighting for reservoir access for over 15 years.Safwaa will soon be joining in this fight.
There is a lot more going on than most people realise.SAFFA has for years asked for unrestricted public bank access to all sa streams as exists in Victoria.
