Whos been fishing the Murray River lately? 1 year, 11 months ago #89232

Is anyone having much luck chasing callop in the last few weeks??

Ive gone stone cold the past month

Around the Murray Bridge - Mypo area,

Just got back from 4 hour fish, launched @ MB, and headed to Mypo, fished half dozen snags on the way, not a single hit,

Then spent 30 mins trolling under the twin bridges @ MB, for nothing more than a lost spinnerbait

Anyone done any better than this lately?

All the big fish from my place and river reports I've heard says spinnerbaits - the bigger the better

Never had much faith in them, but every lure has its time and place

The USA fishermen add rubbertails to them - i wondered hat a srub worm or small reddy would do rigged up and cast......

Just lent Tony B my US book on spinnerbaits and how to make and fish them.......so watch this space

I'm not sure I thought it would have taken another month or so to reach that area? could be wakeboats or built up silt in the locks because they have been letting a bit through.?

mabey lures like mumblers would work better in the murky water than hb's because they put out more vibration.

Interesting...

All the times I've fished your place, I'm yet to catch any natives besides small silvers

Will hammer those spinners next time.

with the murky water try up against the banks and along the weedline run your lure parallel with the weed or bank as this is where the fish are . any snags in close to the bank will have fish around them so dont be afraid to bang the lure along the edge of the timber .. .....

back in the days when pro,s netted the murray drum nets were always set up against the bank in the first two or three metres out from the bank as this this is the area the fish travel up the waterways in dirty water ..most fish are in less than two metres of water...

dont be afraid to fish in shallow water as we get callop in less than a metre of water with conditions like they are...

use spinner baits or chatter baits in darker colours with the murky water....we prefer skirts in black and purple or black and pink or just plain black....with dark lure heads...and use colorado deep cup blades in copper or brass.....the deep cup allows you to retrieve at a much slower rate with maximum vibration and noise.....

in the dirty water the fish are using the sense of noise and vibration to feed rather than sight....

and dont be afraid to drop a few opera,s in the back waters or slower parts of the river as the dirty water is bringing out the yabbies in some areas .. we have been getting our quota of big yabbies every outing lately

Pretty sure it's illegal to use operahouse nets in the murray? or is that only every other state?

cheers

get yourself a copy of the victorian, new south wales and south australian fresh water regulations books you will be amazed at the difference between them..... opera,s are only illegal in ,on or near any victorian public waterway......the murray is either south australia or new south wales . both of which allow opera house nets...you also need a n.s.w. fishing licence to fish the murray even from the victorian side .but need a victorian one to fish any offshoot or creek coming off the murray on the vic side ..

also interesting to note in the latest victorian one there is a bag/possession limit on redfin of 30 ...

cheers m/f

i've found that running sounds in the the fish symbol mode particually in freshwater can give you false readings, it will put a fish symbol up if it picks up a gas bubble, rotting tree branch or biodegradable matter on the bottom(emittes gas as they are decompossing), if you are close to to another boats wake & so on. so if you can run that sounder in a manual mode (that is with out fish symbols) put it on that you then need to set the depth I'm guessing proberly no more than 8 metres (if it has metric)if you can set it to work from 2 to 8 metres would be good your not going to see that many fish in that first 2 metres if your trolling anyhow (i'm assuming here you know this bit of river pretty well so you wont need it on shallow setting). set the screen scroll speed high (if 10 is high set it at 8) turn up the sensertivity to high. this you will have to play with i run mine at 6 or 7 also if your sounder has a fresh or saltwater mode make sure its on the right setting. hope this helps.

sorry mate it turns out it's only half of the murray in nsw and a couple of other sections in the mid/lower murray where their not permitted and all vic public waters.
I used to live on the murray in nsw so I know all about the diff lisences it can be confusing though as some lakes on the murray come under vic regs and some don't and some are under vic boating regs and some arent.
only 3 nets permitted in SA is it worth it?

that redfin limit is a joke noxious species that can not be released but can't be kept over 30 limit

cheers

Getting back on topic...

Llody - i think you are wasting your time fishing with lures around Murray Bridge - unless you are happy with 1-2 fish per session and plenty of fishless ones in between...

I live in MB and I don't fish there - the area around Caloote is much better and only 10 mins away - as Murray Fisher has said, get in really tight - try the cliffs at Caloote and get within 1-2 of the cliffs with shallow diving lures and get the right near the bank....
