Got the fishing bug baaaaaaad at the moment , so even though it was pissing down with rain this arvo after work, I still headed down the torrens (between Gum and Cudlee Creek) to try a new spot that I had been eyeing off for a while, and that was recommended to me by Scorpion.

Anyways, arrived at this little spot here and had one rod in the water for Carp when down came the rain.....

...now, the spot looked fairly shallow, and I couldn't see any fish, but persisted anyway. About 10 minutes after arriving got a run on the unweighted bread and hooked into it, but it busted me straight off....didn't even get a good feel for the fish. Not to worry, re rigged and flicked another bit of bread out and set about having a bit of a flick for reddies (wasn't really expecting any to be honest). About 4 casts with the little green SP and I get a solid hit that felt and fought like a Carp ....Got it to the bank and turned out to be a solid reddie....prolly getting on for about 35cm (my Torrens PB )

Spent about another 20 minutes at this spot, but without another hit on the bread or SP I decided it was time to switch spots.

Walked downstream around the corner and was thinking there wasn't much water here. Walked past a pool that would have been maybe 3m wide at its widest and not very deep without giving it another thought. After getting about another 50m downstream I decided to turn back and gave this pool a closer look. Getting down next to it it still didn't look too promising and was about to move on when I spotted two large (not huge) Carp hoovering along the bottom on the edge of the shallows. Flicked bread at them for about half an hour without so much as a sniff. (I actually landed a bit of bread on the forehead of one of them and it swam halfway down the pool with it just sitting there ). Eventually I just put both rods in with an unweighted Bread bait and waited......

........About 10 minutes later I strike into a pretty good Carp on the 2kg gear. After a little bit of a struggle and a pretty good fight for the size of the pool I get the beast up.....Bit bigger than the one I caught under the bridge a few days ago.....and with the biggest head I have seen (compared to body size). After some happy snaps I put it in the bag and put a bait back out on the 2kg line....

.....straight I hooked into a another Carp......muuuuuuuch bigger than the first one. This went like stink on 2kg line up and down the length of the channel in the middle of the pool. I think I am lucky there were no major snags (except the rocks on the far wall) cos otherwise I would have been dragged through them for sure. Bout 10 minutes later I landed the fish on the shore.....My PB Carp from any water way ever!!

after not getting any more hits at this spot I moved upstream higher than my first spot and found a beautiful pool full of fallen branches and reeds. Could see Carp everywhere but couldn't hook one for the life of me . Had a flick for reddies to but could only catch tiny little sprats a bit longer than my fingers

Took the Carp home to measure and weigh them up. The little one weighed in at 2kg (almost 4.5lb) and the big one went over 11lb on the scales (just over 5kg). Needless to say I was most pleased with another fantastic (albeit very wet) evening fishing session on the Upper Torrens

Nice report there Booma

Those shallow water Muddies really hit the afterburners hey

pretty lean looking fish around there, maybe food's a bit short for them at the moment.

Getting two PB's in the one session has gotta be a buzz , so well done
dmn de do dah what to do lmao

Cheers Guys!

Yeah 2 PB's in one session (was fishing for about 2.5hrs) was awesome....especially since I wasn't expecting either and definately wasn't expecting the Reddie.

The first Carp was very skinny....it was just about wider around its head than its belly I reckon. the bigger one wasn't too bad....definately not a fat one though. They were both in a relatively small pool with at least 2-3 other carp so I imagine competition for food was pretty high

Redfin was in fantastic condition though (plenty of Mosquito fish in these parts )

Thanks Yeah I was always told by a mate you get some killer reddies in the rain...never really had much luck before though (I usually have most luck on bright clear days, just before sunset)

Forgot to put that the big Carp measured 77cm and beat my former PB (From Sturt Reserve at Murray Bridge) by 4cm

Re:Fishing in the Rain - Upper Torrens again 1 year, 11 months ago #89390

Both rain and shine is where it @ for me, although all my pb's have been broken on either rainy or heavily overcast days. These first rains in a while mighta put em on the chew for ya.
Nothing like wading through a river in the rain.

Me and a mate went out today sussed some new grounds, not much of a sniif (not one fish landed and I dropped one) all day even though we fished some incredible areas that'd def hold fish , so you did well for yaself!

Great going Booma

Nice Reddy to boot.

The fish that busted you off was probably the one i caught on a spoon.

Over 6kg, took 20 mins to land on 6lb line, using my bream outfit. :woohoo

Only downside was i left my camera home.

Hi

I'm researching a story on the Torrens for the winter issue of Adelaide Hills Magazine, looking at the river and how different people use it. I came across your posts on the forum and thought you might have some interesting views or information about the river from a fisherman's perspective. Could you please contact me on 8398 0360, or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it - it would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
