TOPIC: What type of fish is this?

What type of fish is this? 1 year, 9 months ago #98463

Was down fountain valley having fun on the carp when I hooked this fella. Have absolutely no idea what he is, probably around 47cm.

The missus caught one too (a lot smaller obviously ) they seemed to come on once it started to rain.

But ye recognition would help, went through all the PIRSA books and everything and can't match him up. Any ideas? Hell of a fighter too.

When I was pulling him up I thought it was a carp but his fins are different and he doesn't have the little carp whiskers either.

That'd be a Tench....rare in SA

Lucky to catch one in fact...there aren't that many around the place from what I have heard!

They are an english/European fish

he was a lot more fun to catch than carp double his size, lots of runs and headshakes. Although I was using 4lb leader so I had a light drag, any heavier line and I probably couldve skull dragged him out of there.

Know if they're any good for eating? They look like they'd taste like carp, muddy and filthy.

Man, I reckon you'd better go into hiding

There are guys on here who live, sleep and Breath those introduced beauties

THE most powerful fresh water fish and revered and respected in the UK

as it's finest Coarse Fish species!!!

There are pockets of these fish in a lot of spots around our state but

they are all carefully guarded as no doubt Fountain Valley once was

There's a pic and a bit of editorial on a tench caught around here in "Wild Coast" magazine
ALL FISHINGS GREAT, REDFINS THE BEST

Haha,

coz i didn't know what he was I chucked him in a tank. He's still reviving I have him propped up with an airstone shooting bubbles into his gills so hopefully he'll pull through.

Is that a decent sized fish for his species? How big can they get.

For a respected fish catching 2 of them by accident has certainly boosted my ego a bit haha.
