Tench are an introduced noxious species and are not allowed to be returned to the water, same as redfin or carp
I suppose you could be mistaken with its colouring it was some sort of protected european catfish

hi guys i'm new to this site and was just having a trawl through as the weathers shocking today. tench are a lovely fish to catch and i really cannot see the point in putting them in the same class as carp or reddies, there certainly is'nt enough in our state to threaten any native species, they probably would taste very earthy and they are indeed a good fighting fish. seeing pictures of fish covered in blood does'nt please me but it's the captors prerogative i spose. correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure that tench are not considered noxious so there should'nt be any harm returning them. after all if every fish we catch ends up like this pretty soon there'll be nothing left to fish for, especially in places like fountain valley where, being fed by the run off from the storm drains and all the crap off the road, nothing "decent" could survive in there anyway. this whole attitude of "its a little different so what the hell kill it" shocks me and i for one would like to still have something to fish for with my children when they are old enough.

i'd love to know where you're getting this information mate as all i can find out is that they are of "least concern" that does'nt mean noxious species

www.sanfa.org.au/fw-fish-01-tench.htm
The Tench is capable of growing up to about 50cm long. It was introduced into the River Murray by acclimatisation societies in 1876 and spread rapidly throughout the Murray Darling System. A small population is thought to occur in the Onkaparinga River. Its numbers reduced drastically in the 1970's when Carp (Cyprinus carpio) became abundant. Other introduced fish pose a more serious problem to native fishes than Tench. Quite edible although not particularly tasty, tench are little known and seldom fished for in Australia. They are not predatory and are not thought to be a threat to any of our natives. They failed to establish large populations here and are just as threatened by habitat modification/destruction as much of our natives.

Pound for pound you will not find a better fighting fish (especially on light gear) and they look pretty cool too with red eyes. I dont think they have to be beached like carp etc but as a rule if its an introduced species i beach it

but introduced does'nt mean noxious, that is my point why be cruel to something just because someones put it there?

www.environment.sa.gov.au/soe2003/biodiversity.pdf

Not worth downloading the whole PDF, so here you go !!

There are a number of introduced freshwater fishes
that are having a significant impact on freshwater
ecosystems in South Australia. These species compete
with native fish for food and habitat and can adversely
affect water quality. There is limited comprehensive
information on the distribution and extent of these
species and so it is difficult to predict trends.
Those of primary concern are the European Carp,
Eastern Gambusia (or Mosquitofish), Redfin (or
European) Perch, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and
Tench. Release of any of these species following
capture is illegal under the Fisheries Act 1982.

At the end of the day, they are basically just another carp ! Eat it, use it for bait, fertiliser what ever ever you want, just DONT put it back in the water or you may well get a heafty fine slapped on you. People have mobile with video camera now and all they need to do is supply this to fisheries wih your number plate and you're gone.

The irony here is that the current legal status of brown and rainbow trout is "desirable introduced species" with a size limit of 28cm.
SAFFA asked for trout to be removed from the noxious species list in its anglers wish list supplied SARFAC on request (this wish list was requested to all angling clubs)to be used as an election issue.
The current contradictory laws means that trout on one hand cannot be returned to the water but on the other must be returned if under 28cm.

Yeah your right Pirahna ,their fighting prowess is much overated.I have caught several up to 5 Lb on my fly rod in Konongwootong in Victoria while targeting Trout and they fight quite poorly.Usually they just roll on the surface a couple of times before giving up.
Also they leave your hands and fly line covered in a disgusting slime.
My father who is 86 Yo informs me that before the Euro carp invasion they were the biggest pest in the Murray and widely despised. There is no reason to return these vermin to our waters.Fertilizer is all they are good for.
