G’day all.
I got out in the Tinny on Saturday morning in search of few Crabs and hopefully a few Gar. Well the Crabs came to the party but the Gar were not playing the game . I put the berley pot out and almost immediately there were Yellowtail Scad everywhere , good fun C&R with these while waiting to pull the nets and kept half a dozen or so for bait. When the Gar did show up they were not keen to take a bait , I tried a few different tactics but had very limited success. I could see them clearly feeding in the berley right at the back of the boat and watch them swim up to my bait and NOT take it , so I changed baits and threw the bait I had just taken off into the berley trial to watch it get readily eaten by the Gar , maddening . I dropped a Squid jag in at some point, just using a hand line, and I had left it for about 30 seconds when I heard it spinning around on the holder I had for it, and then nothing??? Wound in the line and my favourite Squid jag was gone??? It was a beautiful morning to be on the water , all the crabs were a good size and all males.

A couple of the not so fussy Gar

Some great sizes

A decent couple of feeds

Nice crabs PP.
Havent really given them a good try this year myself !

With the gar, are u using the smallest possible trickle of burley ?
It takes very little to bring them around in any curent and not much to keep them interested either,

Personally I find a small swivel to a light leader with a single hook works really well, adding or removing clip swivels to it as required for depth
If I knew something about that, I wouldnt even tell myself

cheers for the report. got some cracker blueys the other day myself. Ive oftn had success when the gar are timid by just putting a tuna oil dipped rag in the berley pot rather than berley they can eat.

hey I was finding the gar hit and miss as well. After a bit of experimenting, little bits of squid tentacles did the trick for me(on that day)

And yeah I've been getting nice blueys from West beach all the way to Semaphore, they are everywhere atm. Get into it fellas.

Nice catch btw PP getting hungry now!

Thanks for the replies.

@phear. I was in the Largs Bay area.

@aff, abf and Nikhum. Thanks for the bits of advice. I've done a fair bit of Gar fishing landbased, so I just need to adapt the techniques to fishing out of the Tinny. So the fun is all in the learning ,and I will keep your advice in mind for next time.

Cheers

Hey PHEAR try around the grange area if your having a hard time, on an incoming tide in the mornings. Water depth between 6-8 metres.

When its calm you can see the crabs fighting for the bait so funny cracks me up!
