TOPIC: Quick leccy question

Quick leccy question 1 year, 6 months ago #114334

Saturday i took the Tinny fishing for first time with the new leccy,

I dont get my new deep cycle battery for another 2 weeks, so i took a fully charged "car" battery so i could just try the leccy and see what speeds it gave,

Question is: Would the power output be different when i use a proper marine deep cycle battery V's the Car battery?

As i was expecting a bit more thrust, because iam pretty sure with a slight head wind trolling will struggle,

Boat is 4.2M Tinny,

Cheers

The power output wont be any different.

The thing is a car battery is normally high CCA (cold cranking amps) to turn the motor over and get the car started, as this takes quite a bit of power from a battery.

These batteries aren't designed to be run flat though, and using them on an electric motor where you constantly run the battery down and recharge it will kill this type of battery very quickly, whereas a deep cycle battery is designed to be run down and recharged over and over.

If the electric motor isn't providing the speed or power you need, the bottom line really is to get a larger electric motor with higher thrust.

On a 4.2m boat I would suggest you'd need around 55lb thrust to provide the power you need against wind and tide.

Am yet to measure it accurately, but reckon I get around 2-3 knots at full speed, with my bowmounted 54lb'r on a similar boat, with a little more weight however

That would be fine on a 4.2m tinny.

As CK suggested, expect to get about a walking pace from it.
