Thanks Sambo,

Bit of info:. 2001 Mercury 25 hp 2 stroke, forward steer, electric start. Not used since serviced 11/3/01. Impeller replaced. Invoice available. The fuel tank - 3/4 full will also go as apparently a new tank comes with the unit.

Only reason for considering selling is I'm about to replace it with a unit with power tilt as I'm aging rapidly and want to be using the boat for a few more years.

If I do swap, I will fit a Tohatsu from Boating Scene - Para Hills West. Never met the bloke but Wally who owns the place was extremely helpful and took interest in what I was hoping to achieve.

Cheers
Brian.

u'll be happy with the tohie, but gotta say I love the 3cyl yam on my new rig

Many thanks CK.

I almost OD'd on researching all this Perhaps the only real reason for Toh - apart from a pretty good deal, is it seemed to be the lightest. Mercs are 78 kgs plus and I understood the Yammy was even heavier but my facts may be wrong re that bit. The Toh. is 68.5.

The unit is to suit a 4 metre tinny runabout and I'm a bit sensitive about engine weight. The hull is rated to a max 40 hp and most 2 strokes seem to be in the upper 70 kg range.

I've made no commitments on brand - just looking for the the most cost effective.

Appreciate the thoughts.

Sounds just what i'm looking for except for the forward steering...... can you just sit at the back of the boat and steer and control it??

Dont want to take this thread off topic as its Sambos, gig and he's looking for a donk, but just because the tohie is cheaper than its rivals, doesnt mean its any less worthy. I'd argue that its better than some of them infact. Wally's pricing is usually pretty good, but remember you also have a dealer an hour away to your North that may also be worth checking in on.

we used to use tohatsu as our race motor for the rubber ducks with surf life saving and I would buy one in a flash. Very reliable, great cold starts, in fact one of the crucial things in racing was start first time everytime and they did.

My fatehr in law just did the research (as he does in great depth being a mechanic on the trams) and he walked away with one a very happy customer.

Sambo hope you get what your looking for mate, I wish I knew a month ago.. the blok across the road sold one on his tinnie virtually brand new for just over $2k !! couldn't believe it, great deal.. they're out there !

Just had a look at the motor and I would think a tiller handle would fit straight on where the forward steer arm first connects. But being a mechanical dill, I can certainly check it out or others may have the answer.

So, can a foward steer be easily converted to tiller steer?

As far as I know its pretty straightforward, but obviously
depends on how its set up and if a conversion kit or parts ares still available
dmn de do dah what to do lmao

As this stage I think the final decision is still in the air.

Price is always vital, as is after sales service. Have had Evinrude ETEC thrown into the ring and reviews are excellent.

Engine weight is also a factor and shall check with Blue Fin re maximum transom weight - it's rated @ 40 hp max.

Appreciate the info from experienced members. Invaluable
