Hi,

I have a stacer sea hawk,(aluminium) looked after very well by a local marine mech,

Does a boat like mine have anode blocks? and if so is this to stop oxidisation?

Im asking because i want to add on bits, and have no idea the type of screws to use, and dont want to damage her, id ask my mech, but of course hes off fishing!

stainless steel?
any advice appreciated,

Shes well looked after and washed down regulary etc

Ali

Well that saves me reposting!

Alikat there is no anode on your boat, only on your motor, and when properly affixed the anode on the motor will also protect your hull.

Anodes do not stop oxidisation, which is an effect of aluminium in contact with oxygen, and there is no preventing it. Having said that, oxidisation is no problem for you, all it does is tarnish aluminium, and it's the reason why none of us bother to polish our boats.

Anodes instead prevent electrolysis from eating through aluminium boats, by sacrificing themselves instead.

Use 316 stainless screws and bolts in your boat and you will be fine.

So theres a thing on my moter protecting the whole thing?, and if i use low grade screws they will just rust and need replacing eventualy?, and if i use high grade and the anode thing works, theres no drama?

I wash in just water, most trips,
with a full on clean once a year and the mech does the rest lol,

Thanks guys, few jobs i can do now since the weather is crap

Old saying Ali ,

Buy cheap and you pay twice

In this case, if the screws rust out in the alloy, you'll end up paying WAY more than twice the cost of the cheaper screws, when you have to have the rusty holes cut out and re-welded, or else when you go to sell the boat, any buyer will think twice when they see it

pay the bit extra and its not only an investment in $ terms, it helps "buy" some peace of mind too
dmn de do dah what to do lmao

use either ali rivets and there will be no problem, or use stainless screws and apply a product called duralac. it will prevent the dissimilar metals from reacting.

a tube is worth about $25 and will last your lifetime plus mine....
