I've kept meaning to get the trailer tyres checked, just not quite happy with them for no real reason.
One was wearing on the edges and looked round in profile.
I also needed to organise a spare.
Bloody good job I took the trailer down to my local tyre shop.

They took one look at them and basically declared them dangerous.
Tow (front ones) were splitting along the tread and had a rounded profile - basically the structure had "let go".
Either of these two could have exploded at any time.

Very little wear on the main tread - probably done no more than 2000 k's on them.

The tyres were 6 ply ,the tyre bloke said he would certainly not put those on the trailer - I now have some very good 8 plys fitted .
On the manufactures site on the spares side they supply 9 and 10 ply!

Kept the old tyres.

I am furious about this, surely the tyres should have lasted a lot longer than this?
I was checking pressures regularly and no abuse.

It gets worse the more I think about this........imagine doing 80k's and one exploded. Probably the boat would not be stable and could possible come off the trailer/ roll/smash into oncoming traffic/take us out.
I just shudder to think about it.

The actual trailer manufacturers name is on the tyres!
I would not put my company's name on something so dangerous!

So I reckon I have had to fork out for new tyres a lot earlier than could be reasonably expected.

Where doers that leave me??

It's a grey area as tyres have no real warranty.

I reckon someone needs to reimburse at least some of my cost.
The tyres have certainly not lived up to reasonable use or whatever Consumer Affairs term it.

Called Consumer Affairs and they suggest speaking to the boat dealership - which is reasonable.
Can't blame them particularly as they will buy the trailers in and sell them on.
Called the dealership but the boss has not come back to me yet.
I'm not going to blast the dealership yet,it does not help to wind folk up.

It's a matter of principal as well - my life could have been on the line, not to mention others + the boat!!!

Not mentioning the trailer name publicly but it is a well known brand.

I'd welcome any thoughts.

Hey Tyke, thats terrible to hear about. I am definately no expert on Tyres, but are you sure they werent re-treads put on that trailer, and god help us if thats what a trailer manufacturer or boat dealer has done. The reason I ask is I would have thought that radials would have lasted way longer than what they did in your case.

My wife got retreads and they barely lasted 4months before letting go.

Has the trailer got a manufactured date on it and does it match when the boat was made. Im wondering if the trailer has had a retread put on it by someone?

Hi Brett.

I'm no expert either

They were not retreads as far as I know, supplied as new with the boat.
I'm going to have a look at them now to see if there is any clue??

Still boils down to the fact the tyres were unsafe far tooooo quickly!

Stunned to see the trailer maker's name of the tyres!

I have a feeling that once the guys at the boat dealership hear about this (ie the boss), I think there going to definately offer to buy you a new tyre or tyres plural for your trailer.

I would think that they would not want you to be out of pocket or for their reputation to be tarnished...and for the price of two tyres, its in their best interest to replace and replace quickly.

I dont want to believe it, but unfortunateley I do !

I bet the Boss doesn't want to know about it !

Seems to me they've been caught out and are looking for an out, meanwhile hoping you'll go away !

urh suggests that maybe other tyres may have ben added since new I think, but even if this is the case, someone has done the wrong thing, and in doing so has put peoples lives and property at risk
How many others have they done like this too then I wonder

If it was me I'd be threatening to name and shame unless something was done, then name and shame the dodgy buggers anyway !

As you are doing Tyke, give the boss a chance to get back to you. He may want to or be doing an investigation of his own.

Need to give him a little more time.

I'll be reasonable all the way and give a decent amount of time for folk to come back.

I had to cal the dealer anyway - to book a service.
Said I could not bring it in until I replaced the tyres

I have replaced them now.

What's wrong with mentioning the brand.... afterall, it's plastered all over the thing... even on the sidewall of the tyres

Why would you protect a company that put's out cheap quality products and you end up being out of pocket. You're only being honest and not making dodgey claims

I'm a bit shy of mentioning the brand Dunbier.

Consumers have a right to know... you may have just saved someones life down the track now that they are aware of a problem

Good point Fishie, but if someone is being dodgy, whats to stop them from simply reverting to the practice, assuming they are knowingly doing it anyway

These stories always worry me
