Hey everyone, I'm looking at getting a new reel or possibly even a couple.. I've had my eye on a Penn 950ss and daiwa gs-9.. I would like to use them for both surf fishing and snapper, any opinions on which would be best? Or even if you could suggest something else around the $250 mark.. Thanks all feedback appreciated

Forgot to mention the snapper fishing is from a boat not land based, thanks..

SS all the way, infinite anti reverse, 5BB, superior line capacity and gear ratio.

Also bullet proof, they are the reel of choice for a lot of charter operators (and pro line fisho's) for a reason.

Finally the SS is cheaper, seen them advertised recently for $130! I was nearly tempted and I have no idea what i might use it for.

This is a painful post for me as I'm a Daiwa fanboi but you can't deny the stats.

The Penn hands down and should easily be under 250.

I cant believe the GS9 is still around
Was a great spinning reel used by the hardcore LB snapper specialists back in my youth & outside my meager budget, but I'm sure there are far better & lighter reels around now for the money.

Anyone know the attraction of them now or why in fact they are still available?

Same with the BG series, cant be big sellers

The old GS 9's are real stump pullers for sure and the BG 90 was good too,though the line capacity was a bit against them I reckon.
I have the "older" Spinfisher,the 9500 SS,as opposed to the 950 S, that was made in the USA rather than where-ever they are made these days.

Well I went down to anglers choice today and bought myself the 950, and endedup getting a new surf rod aswell
can't wait to give them a try!!!!!

I own a GS9, and it's a gutsy old beast, there wouldn't be a fish in the sea that I'd be afraid to tackle with it. And they hold their value really well.
But you made the right choice with the Penn, if I had my moolah again I would have invested in something newer definately, although there is absolutely nothing wrong with the GS9.
They are rated as the toughest surf reel ever made, and I'm sure the reason they do still make them is not just for their retro-cool (hey i hear retro is in fashion ), but also because their indestructability.

just need to put your earplugs in when I wind the GS-9 in haha bloody ratchet
