Went out last night with high expectations of a place called Cherry lake at Altona which has Browns, Rainbows, carp, redfin and tench stocked ( all public and governmet funded mind you !!) Anyway.. water was filthy so I gave it a miss and headed down to Williamstown for a look around the beaches there.
By pure fluke found my way onto a wall where a hot salmon session was taking place. As I was gearing up saw a few 3lb salmon hitting the deck and got me pumped ! First cast... wind knot.. no surprise, the line hadn't been stretched for 3 months.. quick untangle.. and back into it. Well.. no longer had I lost my first blade to the extremely shallow rocky water that the bite stopped and seemed to have moved on. Only had one hookup which wrapped me around a rock in it's first run...got the blade back minus the fish.
I hung around for an hour continually casting the blades out and ripping them back along the surface. The odd one was pulled here and there with 20 odd guys on the one wall still casting. An old bloke was trolling lures 100mtrs out in an old put-put style boat pulling the odd one in deeper water but they never came back in.
Missed the peak of it by minutes so after I finish work tonight I'm straight back down there !!
Have another stocked (public) dam to hit up on the way back as well. Even crazy enough to bring the waders with me so going to get into the thick of it !!

Returned the following days to find I had just missed the school again. The birds where the tell tail sign though. I chased them out onto a reefy out crop in the waders but just out of reach and moving quicly

On the way back to base, I thought I would stop into Weribee river mouth.. good move !! Pulled into the car park to find the school just starting...let alone the people rocking up for it. Standing room only within 30 mins but great fun. Everyone casting lures of some description and quite a few girls and kids out there as well... great to see

One thing I was very impressed with was the stocking of public dams and waterways in vic. Certainly a leap ahead of SA in that regard !!

Cherry Lakes in Altona ( 30 mins S/W of Melbourne ) stocked with browns/rainbows and also contains redfin, carp, tench... who knows what else.

Plenty of similar scenarios the more research I did. Fishing licences being put to good use !! Something SA could/should follow !!

The weather was crap and couldn't feel the bottom but i tried !!

Mate there was a stretch of around 200mt with a fisho every 3 metres. Few tangles but no hot heads. Just cast straight out and retrieve. Was great to see so many keen anglers, all chating, all happy.. most returning their catch, others swapping recipes... just a good environment !!
