TOPIC: netting at thompsons

netting at thompsons 1 year, 6 months ago #112305

how are you people,
went for a wade at thompsons with a mate and we got maybe 100m of shore when out of nowhere a netter came within 20m from us, started doing donuts for around 30-40m horizonta with beach line and approx 200m out to sea. tried looking for any id on the boat but it was either covered up or non existant.
Q: are those rapist allowed so close to shore or allowed to rape thompsons at all?
cheers guys
btw whiting fingerlings

Hi,

Thanks for the question.

Commercial net fishers have access to Northern Gulf St Vincent and are restricted in their activities by a number of rules and regulations that they must follow. Some of these include gear types / sizes, size limits on fish taken and closed areas. One of these restricts commercial net fishers to using haul nets in water that is not greater than 5 metres in depth.

From the activity you have described, I would suggest this behaviour would be a fisher actively looking for a school of fish prior to using his net. By the description of location, close to shore at Thompsons Beach, he is allowed to carry out the activity in that location.

Cheers,

Troy Harris
Fisheries Officer Birkenhead

No rec line fisher likes the "square hooks" nowadays, and even if hth Pro was fishing within the law, IF he didnt have any details on his boat, he is supposed to in case he ever DOES do the wronmg thing.

He may not even have been a pro anyway

Maybe a call to Fisheries would have still been justified at the time in that case
dmn de do dah what to do lmao
