TOPIC: Legality of using "Sabiki" Rigs

Legality of using "Sabiki" Rigs 1 year, 5 months ago #117349

G'day All

I'd just like a bit of clarification on the legality of using "Sabiki" rigs or similar. These rigs are freely available in tackle stores and the fishing sections of Big W, Kmart, etc. As far as I can tell, all of them have 6 hooks attached. This seems to be at odds with the section "Permitted Devices" in the current SA Recreational Fishing Guide which states, in part:

"Each line may have
- up to three hooks attached or
_ up to five hooks joined eye to shank or threaded together. This will be considered as one hook."

However, it would seem that hard-bodied lures with two (or sometimes three) trebles attached (in effect 6 or 9 hooks in total) would generally seem to be OK and not raise any attention. Is this because the hooks are not theoretically "attached" to the line (they're attached to the lure, for sure, but they're not directly attached to the line)?

A definitive answer would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

PS I accept that just because a store sells something, it does not necessarily make it legal (e.g. Opera House yabby nets with wrong size entry points).
My short-term memory isn't as good as it used to be...and another thing, my short-term memory isn't as good as it used to be.

think you've answered your own question here

trebles, gangs & snoods, count as one hook only

Re:Legality of using 1 year, 5 months ago #117359

I think the big name stores used to stock casting nets, but they're gone now and they certainly weren't legal in SA...

You can only use Sabiki rigs with 3 hooks.

They are good for catching baitfish such as Yakkas and Slimies. I have used them a fair bit in NSW and used to make my own.

www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreationa...gulations/sw/methods
"One line may have six single hooks with a lure attached to be used by the method of hand jigging only."

6 Hook Sabikis are not legal to use in SA, but you can buy them and cut them in half.

Have also seen other nonlegal gear sold in SA such as witches Hats nets and Mud Crab traps.

Hi,

As already explained by another forum member, under current legislation you can only use Sabiki rigs with three hooks.

A lure treble is considered one single hook so these are legal, so if you had three trebles on a lure - this constitutes three hooks.

Hope this helps.

Try tipping them with a sliver of squid

I do this with my jigging deep sea knives as well - skipper on a charter in darwin couldnt grasp why I did it on my occy lures on a trip

I showed him - The occy lures on their own didnt work, bait on its own didnt work, tip em with a triangle of squid and BOOOOOM:S He held his hands up because I was catching more fish than anyone else
