Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 12/05/2016

bjorn2fish
  • Weather on the weekend is looking much better than what we have had over the last few days, with northerlies on Saturday and dropping of in the afternoon and light and variable winds on Sunday.

METRO
With the water really stirred up there has been plenty of snapper caught at the Star wreck and surrounding areas. Norma wreck and Grange tyre reef also produce good snapper after these events as well, so it may be worth trying these areas. The broadway should also be worth a good look late in the afternoon Saturday. The rough weather is also a trigger for the whiting to school up and come on the bite. Best places to try is the Black Pole, Silt grounds, Semaphore reef, Grange tyre reef, West beach bag ground. Squid will be slow until the water clears but they should be taking lures in deeper water around the 8-10 metre mark. Plenty of salmon trout are being caught in the Port river from the North Arm towards St Kilda. Some nice mulloway were caught in the river also with fish above the 60 LB mark. Outer harbor breakwater is also a good place to go after big blows where you can get some nice sized snapper moving through the channel edges. Crabs have probably moved out deep but there may be some stragglers around the section bank. West Lakes has some bream and mullet but the mulloway have been a bit slow. Port Noarlunga jetty will have it’s normal salmon in shallow while the water is still dirty.

YORKE PENINSULA
The Yorkes really took a hammering on Monday with several jetties being damaged. Those wanting to chase the snapper from shore should head to Point Riley where the snapper come in to feed on cuttlefish that have been bashed around from the storm. Squid is the better bait to use. Remember to take plenty of sinkers and a lighter trace to the sinker so you can keep your rig. Whiting should really turn it on in most places like Wallaroo, Port Hughes, Balgowan, Port Victoria, Turton, Edithburgh, James Well and there is also some whiting further north around Price. Snapper should be in close and on the barge at Ardrossan, Tippara Reef at Port Hughes, Port Victoria Reef and also they come onto the Songvaar after a big blow and Edithburgh along Marion Reef. Salmon should be in big schools at Browns and along beaches like the Butlers, Dust Hole, Gleeson’s and Berry Bay. Before the storm there was plenty of squid at most of the areas. Best places have been Wallaroo, Port Hughes, Port Victoria, Turton, Edithburgh, Stansbury, Pine Point and south of Ardrossan. Some nice salmon trout have been caught in the channel at Port Broughton and there has been some good catches of whiting out near the council wreck. Crabs were also still around in the channel. Port Pirie should see an improvement in fishing now that the blow has stirred things up that way. Whiting should now school up and the salmon trout should push into the river big time. It’s a shame that the Port Germaine jetty took a big hit with 300 metres lost to the sea. This is a great jetty to fish off after a big blow.

SOUTH
Tommies should be on the bite at Rapid Bay and Cape jervis, Salmon will be working the new gutters off Waitpinga and Parsons and Salt creek (If not full of weed) should fire with schools of salmon eager to feed along the gutters.

FRESHWATER
The storm also affected the freshwater fishing with callop just shutting down, hopefully there should now be enough movement in the river to bring them back on near the drop off edges of the river. Mannum, Blanchetown and Castles Landing should be the better areas to try. Chambers creek has some yabbies but not in big numbers.
