Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 27/01/2016

  • The last couple of weeks have been awesome, not in sales but the amount of people coming in with their kids to have a go. I may be old but it is great to see kids enthused again. Great to see!!! While Saturday is looking to be high winds it does drop off very quickly for Sunday and there is nothing better than a blow to get the fish active again, especially with good tides.

METRO
Plenty of crabs are coming in from St Kilda to as far south as West Beach. Some promising news is the whiting are picking up with bag limits at St Kilda all the way down south. Squid have been slow but there is a feed out from Bower Road in deeper water along with West Beach and a few at Brighton. Garfish up north are still reluctant to bite but many years ago I used to die my gents in Red, Green and Blue. I am going to try to get some available for people to try in the next 3-4 weeks. They were killers when we used them and hopefully will be the same today, especially off the jetties. Jetty anglers need to go on the big moving tides to get a feed of crabs right down as far south as Brighton, being Semaphore and Grange being the better places during the night time hours. West lakes has been doing well on the mulloway and bream along with the nice mullet and a few nice garfish. Port River info has been slow this week for some reason but the bream are still very active and there is always a chance for that elusive mulloway.

YORKE PENINSULA
Places like Wallaroo, Port Hughes and even Port Victoria have been doing very well on the crabs, Garfish and especially the whiting. That includes Balgowan. Port Broughton has some nice garfish, crabs and some nice flatties along the sand spits inside the channels. Port Hughes offers some nice squid north of the town along with some nice ruggers out on the Tippara reef. Garfish are prolific out on the light. Port Vic has some nice small Kingies that have moved in around the reef near the jetty along with some salmon at Deadmans pole. Ardrossan is always a good spot when tides pickup along with spots south of Black Point towards Orontes Bank. Edithburgh has plenty of tommies, gar and squid and land based out from the wind farm is producing some nice summer whiting off the shore. Crabs are pretty well everywhere on the eastern side with Price, Ardossan, Port Vincent, Stansbury being the better pkaces. Get them while they are hot. Marion Bay is still producing some big whiting out from the jetty and north in the bay. Tuna are still hot south of Althorpes with best results being the Halco Laser Pro and the Reidy's Judge due to the depths they trawl at. For the beach anglers down south there is still plenty of fish within Pondi, Dolphin Beach and Royston Heads. Turton has squid, Tommies and a few nice garfish, Corney Point is worth a try off the beach and Berry Bay got some nice schoolies off the beach along with Gleeson's Landing.

FRESHWATER
Murray fishing has been pretty awesome but the size is vaery variable. Lots of callop of varying sizes and big carp in the backwaters. Not as much catfish have been caught but things will pickup as the river stabilizes in the next couple of weeks and the traffic on the water subsides.

As I said GREAT to see the whole family coming into the shop and getting out there and having a go. Also hope everyone had a great Australian Day and what I saw out on the beaches the Aussie spirit is still on the beach :)
