The warm waters of Fiji were rewarding for two local anglers enjoying their holidays. Daniel Martin & Kym Rice spent a bit of time checking out local charter operations and casting poppers to the fish schools. Kym is shown holding a large red bass and Daniel an enormous giant trevally.

Closer to home the waters outside Point Sir Isaac’s are very productive on a wide range of fish as the accompanying images show. Brendan Povey is holding a large silver trevally, Dwayne Povey a red snapper and Rob Squire an excellent blue morwong. Images are courtesy of Gary Denton GT Charters.

Matt Beckmann was snapper fishing at Port Neill recently where he landed this surprise catch of a small Samson fish, very unusual for this area.

The photo of the Dolphin Fish was sent in by Ib Svane who is travelling around Mexican waters in his yacht. It took a trolled Halco Laser Pro lure along with some big Spanish Mackerel.

Now for what was biting and where

Venus Bay

When the pilchard boats unloaded from the jetty some phenomenal fishing was had with heaps of small to medium salmon, trevally and tommies on the bite.

Elliston

Night time off the jetty was very good for big tommies, trevally were caught in the mornings and plenty of big squid and garfish throughout the day. Local beaches had whiting and the odd flathead. Boaties found whiting in Anxious and Waterloo Bay.

Locks well

Early morning was best for salmon with most fish in the 2 to 3 kilo range.

Sheringa

Salmon fishing has been good with fish up to 4kg being caught in the afternoon. First Beach had plenty of whiting and a few trevally as well.

Almonta/Gunyah Beach

Small schools of salmon were scattered along both beaches over the weekend. Casting lures to visible fish accounted for a few but the schools were very flighty. Using baits with plenty of berley also worked and salmon up to 70cm and 4kg were reported.

Farm Beach

Since the full moon whiting catches have improved, the sand hills, the pool, seasick bay and Frenchman’s have all produced some good catches. Trevally, garfish and tommies have been caught along the coast and spit from Longnose to Sir Isaac’s.

Coffin Bay

Some small Garfish can be found close to shore near Kellidie, Dutton Bay and the Ledge. A few Snapper have been caught in the channels but have been hit and miss. A mixed bag of whiting, tommies, salmon trout and snook can be picked up around the brothers. Offshore around Greenly and Rocky Islands some patches of small tuna were found.

Port Lincoln

Whiting fishing is better in the local bays with catches from the shore around Stenross’s, by the silo’s; boaties are still catching whiting in Spalding Cove, top end of Boston Bay, Louth and around Boston Island. There are some garfish along the North shore, top of Boston Bay and in the Proper; the garfish in Proper Bay are still being hunted by small kingfish.

Offshore there are good catches of whiting and snapper at the southern end of the Group, whiting at Thistle Island and Dangerous reef.

Boats venturing well south found 5 to 15 kg tuna at Low Rocks and both North and South Neptune Island, and the Cabbage Patch had tuna up to 30kg. Around William’s Island there are some good nannygai and morwong being caught.

Plump eating size salmon and tommies are being caught most days from the wharf. On the local jetties there are some snook, squid and tommies at night; there are also some nice squid around Boston Island.

One keen angler prepared to put the time in along the South Coast was rewarded with a 24 lb mulloway. It was caught on a small bit of squid he found when packing up to come home; the mulloway for the previous hours had ignored pilchards and fresh salmon he had been using.

Tumby Bay

Many boats have been chasing whiting at the Group with mixed results, some rugger snapper were found also. Local beaches had a few yellowfin whiting and garfish were caught at Ski Beach and around Pt Bolingbroke.

Port Neill

The jetty and breakwater had tommies, squid and snook. Snook were very prolific for the boaties and some large whiting were found but they had to work hard for them. Yellowfin whiting and salmon trout were caught from the beaches.

Arno Bay

Whiting fishing has been hard but some bronzies and hammerhead sharks around 4 to 6 feet were found in the same drops as well as few big blue crabs. Snapper news was quiet with the odd big fish out wide and some ruggers in close.
