Port Lincoln 3/2/11

Convention beach has been a popular spot for salmon fishing over the past month with some good results.

Four-year-old Ella Campbell is pictured holding up a salmon caught from the beach recently.

Craig Hawke is among the few who have managed to get out and catch a tuna already this season. Photo is courtesy of Gary Denton from GT Fishing Charters who managed a day off to do this mate’s trip.

Now for what was biting and where

Mt Camel Beach

Small to medium size salmon are in good numbers but bigger fish are very scarce.

Elliston

The local beaches are starting to produce some legal size whiting. The jetty had some enormous squid, trevally and tommies.

Locks well

Salmon around 2 to 3kg were found at different times throughout the day.

Sheringa

Plenty of big salmon were around the surf beaches over the weekend and some big whiting, trevally, tommies and flathead came from First Beach.

Almonta/Gunyah Beach

Some big salmon have been in and out of casting range between Almonta and Golden Island, often with seals close by. Best catches were around dawn and dusk. Gunyah Beach was slow with poor tides over the weekend, but the odd salmon between 1 to 4 kg were caught on bait and lures.

Farm Beach

Nannygai and small to medium snapper are on the bite around from Point Sir Isaac’s. Along the Sandhills from Sir Isaac’s to Longnose there were heaps of small whiting.

Coffin Bay

Plenty of garfish were found in Dutton Bay, salmon trout have been plentiful in most areas. Whiting are mainly undersize with only the odd report of legal size fish.

Port Lincoln

Tuna season is looking very good with fish sighted out from Fishery Bay, around Low Rocks and at the Cabbage patch. Most fish are small but still good fun on light line.

Plenty of nannygai, medium snapper and a few morwong are coming from around Williams Island and West Point.

Outside the local bays, there are whiting at Taylor’s, Thistle Island and at the Group.

In Boston Bay there are garfish, tommies, squid and a few whiting along the north shore.

Squid and whiting have improved around Boston Island.

Tumby Bay

Whiting fishing was good at the Group when the weather allowed boats to get out. The jetty had a few garfish and squid, with better catches of gar caught around the Sandhills. Yellowfin whiting were found at irregular times at Ski Beach, Second Creek and local beaches.

Port Neill

Whiting fishing was productive especially after the wind had stirred things up. Snapper of various sizes were caught on local drops and plenty of snook were found. The jetty and breakwater had tommies, squid and snook while the beaches had salmon trout and yellowfin whiting.

Arno Bay

Snapper came back on the bite offshore early in the week with lots of fish around 8 to 11kg landed.
