Port Lincoln

Some good images this week from both here near Port Lincoln & further up the Gulf. The happy Lincoln guys holding the mulloway are left to right Darren Foster, Martin Thornley and Danny Blayney. The fish were taken on mackerel fillet and the area was vaguely described as Lincoln National Park. The biggest fish weighed around 14 kilo.Local concreter and keen angler John Berta was hosted by Ready Mix out with Fuzzells at Arno Bay; after catching plenty of fish over two days, John tried fishing with some light braid, this time only 4 lb and landed a 20lb snapper. The proof is in the photo.Arno has developed an Australian wide reputation for snapper fishing but that’s not all that is caught. Check out the fat kingfish that Rob Lee of Adelaide caught out with Fuzzells.Putting bait into the water will often turn up an unexpected specimen. Damien Clarke was happy pulling in snapper when he wound in some thing different. The photo shows a juvenile Scalyfin, often seen by divers but not all that common on a rod and line. The one in the photo is close to the maximum size. As the fish age they change from bright orange with neon blue spots to dull yellow orange to bluish black.  Eating qualities are not the best.

Now for what was biting & where.ELLISTONThe jetty has the usual garfish, squid and tommies plus plenty of snook lately. Anxious Bay had mixed bags of whiting, trevally, mullet, and a few bight redfish offshore.LOCKS WELLSalmon were taken both morning and afternoon from trout size up to 3 kg. Larger schools have been sighted further out.SHERINGASmall to medium size salmon were caught off the beaches. Launching off the beach proved worthwhile for good whiting catches, with a feed also taken by anglers fishing from the beach.CONVENTION BEACHSome good salmon were caught from this beach last weekend.FARM BEACH Good mixed bags are coming from along the Sandhill’s and 7 mile beach; species include whiting, salmon tout, tommies, garfish and a few mullet.Towards Greenly and Rocky Islands, there are small schools of tuna moving through, mostly around 15 kg with a few over 20 kg. They are still very flighty, but a few were caught on deep divers, shallow divers, vibes and skirted lures. Bottom bouncers are getting nannygai, snapper and a few blue morwong.

PORT LINCOLNThere has been plenty of salmon around by the shipyards and on occasion at the main wharf. Tommies, snook and a few small squid are being caught from local jetties. A few lucky anglers are also picking up some King George from the town jetty. Some whiting have been caught near Woodcutters and towards Horse Rock.Plenty of large garfish have been on the bite for shore casters at Peak Bay and a few boaties are also getting whiting in Peak Bay.Louth has blue crabs, garfish and snapper; most snapper need measuring.Tuna are again south of Williams’, with some weighing an impressive 30 kg. Williams Island itself has large nannygai, morwong and a few snapper. There are tuna behind Boston but not always in the lease areas. There is a new brochure on fishing around the tuna leases now available at tackle shops and marine outlets. TUMBY BAYAround Tumby some big whiting are around but not in big numbers. Ski Beach had good sized garfish and tommies, plus patches of squid.
