Port Lincoln 23/7/09

SPOT ON FISHING REPORT 23/07/09
One of the images this week is of Dylan Grey of Elliston; Dylan is holding up a few salmon he caught from Locks Well.
Dylan regularly weighs salmon in at Rally’s Roadhouse to be in the chance of winning a prize in the Australian Salmon Fishing Championships.

Another image is of young Ryan Dodd. Ryan was fishing with dad off Murray’s point when he caught this large leather jacket. A good fish that weighed more than his dad’s. This was three-year old Ryan’s first fish.

There is a new Recreational Fishing Guide available at your local tackle and marine outlets. The major change is to the Goolwa Cockle where the bag limit has been reduced to 300 per person, this will take effect from the opening of the season on November 1. Readers should note that the cockles at Almonta / Gunyah beach are “Goolwa Cockles” and are covered by the same regulations.
What is amusing is the centre double page advert for a well known vehicle. It shows not only the ute overflowing with fish but also the boat and trailer loaded to the max with fish.
Not a good example in a recreational fisher targeted guide book but I guess it shows the weight and carrying capacity as far as the advertisers are concerned. It must have worked last year because it’s in again this year.

Elliston & Australian Fishing Championships Update.
Week 7 prize of $200 for the fish weighed in closest to the mystery weight of 1.960 kg was won by Nathan Jacobs of Whyalla. Nathan’s fish from Locks Well weighed in at 1.930 kg and the prize was donated by Tesselaar Electrical and Allchurch Services. 53 fish were weighed in for the week.

Now for what was biting & where.

ELLISTON
Other than those anglers chasing salmon, a few people fished the jetty for some nice tommies.
LOCKS WELL
Small salmon mainly with a few larger mixed in but weather and tides have not been the best for fishing.
SHERINGA
Some reasonable numbers of 1 to ½ kilo salmon have been coming from local beaches despite the weather.
GUNYAH BEACHES
Once again this beach is proving excellent for salmon; Almonta is not quite as successful.
FARM BEACH
Whiting catches have been quite good with most boats trying either north of the ramp or over around Pt Longnose.
COFFIN BAY
Some decent whiting catches have come from the rock ledges in both Coffin and Dutton Bay especially when the wind is blowing and stirs the water up. There are plenty of salmon trout around both for boaties and shore based fishermen.
There were unconfirmed reports of some snapper taken from the Ledge Seal Corner area.
PORT LINCOLN
Salmon continue to be caught along the South Coast and around at the shipyards.
Recent poor tides made whiting fishing difficult in local bays but some boaties caught a good feed or two down at Taylors.
Salmon at the main wharf are very hit or miss.
Both shore based anglers and boaties are getting plenty of squid and a few whiting along the north shore.
PORT NEILL
Jetty and breakwater anglers have been very happy with good catches of plump tommies and nice size squid. There was a couple of reports of snapper up to 4 kg coming from the rocks between Port Neill and north of Arno Bay.
PORT LINCOLN ANGLERS CLUB
Sunday July 26 is the next outing; venue will be Lincoln National Park. It will be a maximum of six fish per species day and a bbq to follow the weigh-in.
Members and any interested members of the public to leave from Spot On at 8.00am. Further information is available from Julie on 8683-0083 or Annette on 8684-5085.
