Port Lincoln 13/8/09
Local charter operator Robert Harding from Kathryn M Charters heads up north every year to escape our winter and take customers fishing out of Karumba. He sent us a photo of a massive 42 kg cobia he caught in early august. Cobia are sometimes referred to up north as ‘black kingfish’ although they are not related to our yellowtail kingfish, apparently cobia are very good eating.
The next image is of four year old Cooper Martin and two year old Cody Martin holding a bream with proud Grandad Kym Rice. This fish was carefully released unharmed, which is vital as there is only a very small population of bream on the Eyre Peninsula.

Australian Salmon Fishing Championships update:
Winner of the week 10 mystery weight was Kevin Barton of Whyalla with a 3.050kg salmon closest to the mystery weight of 3.100kg. Organisers are confident more big fish are still out there and are encouraging anglers to have a go as big salmon are renowned for showing up along the beaches in August.
Now for what was biting and where
Elliston
Boaties fared quite well on whiting in Anxious Bay with good catches averaging around 36 cm. The jetty is very good for the ever-reliable Tommies, while shore casters picked up a feed of whiting from both bays. Talia has not got big numbers of salmon but some of the ones landed were over 5 kilos.
Lock’s Well
Reports from here are heaps of salmon around, mostly small to medium size with the occasional horse over 5 kilos. Best catches were at dawn and dusk.
Sheringa
Plenty of salmon reported here of mixed sizes.
Almonta/Gunyah Beach
Good catches of salmon have been on and off here but if a high tide coincides with early morning or late afternoon some excellent catches have been made. The use of berley and moving to try different gutters is also a big help.
Farm Beach
Some bag limits of whiting came from the Point Longnose to Sir Isaacs’s area, but some shifting around may be needed to locate fish over the 30cm legal size. The sticks area had some good whiting catches to 34 cm but a lot are undersize. The area off the Frenchman had some modest catches of whiting, salmon trout and Tommies.
Coffin Bay
The Ledge area and rocks next to the boat ramp produced a feed of whiting, salmon trout and tommy ruffs.
Port Lincoln
Small schools of salmon and pods of whales were sighted along the Sleaford to Wanna coastline. The Salmon Hole had fish from 1 to 4 kg, plus big mullet and Tommies. Millers Hole was a similar story but the salmon were mostly 1-2 kg. The bays around Pt. Lincoln are very quiet for whiting, and the usual salmon at the Shipyards have gone quiet as well. Good catches of squid came from the North Shore, Proper Bay and around Boston Island. Some of the squid have been a bit wary, this is where the use of a quality squid jag comes into it’s own. A few garfish came from Snapper Rocks to the Kirton Point Caravan Park shoreline. There are still a few reports of whiting around Taylors Landing, but little news of whiting elsewhere.
Tumby Bay
Very quiet in the bay, but a few whiting came from outside Tumby Island. Squid and Tommies are patchy around the inshore reefs, while inside the marina some massive yelloweye mullet to over 40cm were seen cruising around the pontoons.
Port Neill
Whiting catches were hit or miss but some good catches were reported both north and south. Some rugger snapper came from the inshore reefs, while the jetty and breakwater had the ever reliable Tommies and squid.
