Gawler Fishing and Outdoors Fishing report 14/10/2009

Yorke Peninsula
Ardrossan
Boaties have reported good snapper catches with boats that are on the fish bagging quickly. Whiting are still available out from Price and Pine Point however they have slowed over the last few weeks. Gar and snook should move in as the water warms, with blue swimmer crabs already on the move. The jetty anglers caught squid, crabs and Australian herring with the odd yellowfin whiting.
Port Vincent
Boaties reported blue swimmer crabs and whiting around the spit. Squid were thick to the north of the town for those who were drifting the weed beds. Australian herring were available in the marina with a few bream also.
Stansbury
Squid, whiting and blue crabs were caught around the spit with a few snapper reported from around the Orontes. Jetty fishers reported squid, Australian herring and a few snook at night.
Port Giles
Squid, Australian herring and small mackerel were caught during the week. Stingrays and dog sharks were caught by those trying for snapper which should put in an appearance in the next few weeks. The salmon school which frequented the jetty before its closure due to vandalism seems to have moved on due to seals taking up residence around the jetty. Hopefully this jetty remains open to the public and we advise anyone who sees someone doing the wrong thing to report it immediately.
Edithburgh
Australian herring and squid were the main catches from the jetty. Boaties reported snapper and whiting out at Tapleys. Whiting also came from Coobowie bay area along with squid and a few gar.
Balgowan
Big whiting and snapper were reported this week. Whiting were caught in close in the sand patches inside of the reef at Chainman’s and also some thumpers were caught out on the snapper drops. Some huge gar and snook also came from grounds in close.
Moonta/Port Hughes
Crews returned with snapper and whiting this week, whiting were caught around the cape and within the bay itself. Gar and snook have been caught but are patchy. Jetty fishers caught Australian herring and squid with snook at night.
Wallaroo
Boaties have reported snapper from the outer grounds with a few small sharks also taking snapper baits. Squid, snook and whiting have come from grounds around near Point Riley, with blue crabs throughout the bay. Jetty fishers caught squid, Australian herring and snook at night under the lights. Snapper are also on the cards here this month before the ban. Reports from the marina included bream, mullet with rugger snapper also but watch the 38cm size limit.
Metro
Boaties out from St Kilda reported snapper on the northern grounds at night along with whiting and blue crabs with bronze whaler sharks starting to make an appearance. Gar should also be available as the weather warms over the next month. Land based fishers have reported yellowfin whiting a few mullet and salmon trout on the northern beaches up from St Kilda. Those fishing the breakwater have reported salmon trout, but the numbers are well down from the last few months. Port Adelaide produced bream and salmon trout with a few mulloway for those in the know.
Freshwater
All things are pointing towards a ripper freshwater season. The reservoirs are almost at capacity. The influx of water is exactly what we needed to get the reddies fired up in the south parra. Reports from the Murray have come from Mannum to Morgan with river regulars catching callop and redfin along with the usual carp that keep the kids entertained and provide good spot on light line. We have also had several reports of catfish and silver perch captures which is a good sign that there numbers are increasing. Both species are fully protected and must be released if captured.
For any advice come in and see us in the shop, we have a huge range of fishing and boating gear along with camping equipment and firearms. Were open 7 days for your convenience. Happy fishing from the team at Gawler Fishing & Outdoors.
