Gawler Fishing and Outdoors Fishing report 14/11/2009
Yorke Peninsula
Ardrossan
With the snapper ban in place boaties had to look to other species here for a feed. Anglers caught squid, garfish and Australian herring to the south around Rogues gully and Pine point. There were blue swimmer crabs for those with hoop nets, the beaches surrounding Ardrossan also produced a few for rakers although there were lots of throw backs. The jetty had squid, blue swimmer crabs, Australian herring and the odd yellowfin whiting from the shallows. The mulloway school has also been present over the last two weeks with the odd legal fish landed on live bait.
Port Vincent
Boaties caught squid, gar and Australian herring with a few snook for those trawling
the ribbon weed beds. The marina had bream, trevalley, Australian herring and a few salmon trout. The wharf had a few Australian herring at night along with some big blue crabs. There were also reports of yellowfin whiting around by the caravan park.
Stansbury
Squid, whiting, gar and blue crabs were reported by boaties fishing near the oyster leases. Jetty fishers reported squid, Australian herring, and gar with snook at night. Several boats reported seeing small bronze whalers which make for great eating if bled and cleaned immediately. Try skinless bronzy fillets marinated in sweet chilly sauce cooked on the barbeque.
Port Giles
Port Giles has been closed until further notice due to vandalism that took place a week ago. Another case of a small minority wrecking things for the rest of us. Fishers and local businesses can only hope that flinders ports reopen it and give us another chance to fish this iconic jetty.
Edithburgh
Gar, whiting, squid and snook were the main catches reported with whiting coming from sultana passage and coobowie bay. The jetty produced gar, Australian herring, squid and a few snook. Trubridge point had leather jackets, Australian herring and salmon. Mulloway should be showing up on the surrounding beaches any time and beaches like Kemp bay are worth a try.
The Bottom End
Marion bay jetty again produced Australian herring, gar and some big squid. There were reports of mulloway to 25 kg landed from Gleeson’s and the Dust hole. Any of the beaches from Marion Bay around to Corney Point are also a chance of mulloway, salmon and small sharks at night.
Port Victoria
The jetty had squid, Australian herring, yellowtail scad, snook and garfish. Kingfish should put in an appearance in the next few weeks with the warm weather we have had. Boaties reported whiting in close south of the ramp and around Warding Island with mackerel, snook and gar amongst them.
Balgowan
Whiting were reliable in close in the white holes, though crews had to move a few times to bag out. Big gar and Australian herring were on most grounds and responded well to a bit of berley. Nearby beaches also produced some great land based whiting fishing with Australian herring and flathead amongst them.
Moonta/Port Hughes
The jetty had squid, Australian herring, gar, mackerel, and snook at night. Small bronze whalers have been caught at night on floating baits. Boaties found snook, gar and Australian herring in the bay. Whiting came from cape Elizabeth and in close north of moonta jetty.
Wallaroo
The Jetty had Blue swimmer crabs, Squid in the shallows and Australian herring and mackerel at night. The marina had a few bream, mullet and salmon trout. Point Reily
Had squid, whiting gar and snook with small sharks also sighted on the calm days surface swimming.
Metro waters
Loads of boaties took to the water this week with calm waters and warm weather. There were good reports of snook, gar and Australian herring out from St Kilda. Legal whiting were scarce with only some crews managing a bag limit. Bronze whaler sharks were reported all over the metro coast with at least three over 9 ft landed and many smaller eating size sharks caught. Yellowfin whiting were reported on most of the metro beaches with live worms or nippers being the best bait.
Freshwater
The south para reservoir has been producing much more consistent results the trick is to fish first thing in the morning when they open the gates, or just before closing tome. Fish of around 25 cm are common with fish up to 1kg being good fish. Murray fishers reported callop from Blanchtown, Morgan and Swan reach with some fish in the 50cm bracket being caught. The warm weather should see Carp schooling up in large numbers. Targeting them on light spin outfits or fly gear is great fun, and is a good way to teach kids about how to use the drag on their reel while ridding the river of these pests. They respond well to a bread berley
