Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 04/11/2016

bjorn2fish
  • The weekend is looking quite good with winds dropping off by mid-morning Saturday and staying that way on Sunday as well. Most people will be aware of the new size and bag limits for recreational anglers coming in force on December 1 2016. So November is the time to get out there and get a good feed before they come into place. While most of the limits are reasonable the King George Whiting got hit yet again and is unacceptable that recreational anglers have to take this hit again while our professional counterparts take no hit other than the closure in May. These changes will come around and bite them as due to the size increase there will be more people fishing the bigger fish grounds than ever before.

METRO
Blue crabs have been in good numbers and the best time is getting out early for quick bag limits. Silt grounds, St Kilda, Semaphore and Grange are the better areas. Whiting are still managing to hold out of Grange, West Beach and south of Brighton but have slowed or just too small in other areas. Snapper are still out wide out from North Haven and some small pods up onto the northern grounds north of the culverts. Some nice ruggers are coming from O’Sullavan’s also. Garfish are in good numbers out from West Beach, Grange, Semaphore, Norma and in and around the Silt grounds and Black Pole. Squid are improving around the Semaphore area and out in deeper water out from Bower Road, West Beach and Marino have been doing better. Snook are around West Beach, Grange, Semaphore and they are even getting them off the jetties late in the afternoons. For jetty anglers your best time is at night to get crabs and garfish. Port river is still doing OK for salmon trout and the bream are starting to move further down the river. Best areas have been near Bower road outlet, Birkenhead, near the north arm opening. Some snook were caught late in the afternoon off the break water at the Port Adelaide boat ramp. Mulloway news has been thin but there should be some moving up the river by now with North Arm, Quarantine station, Sub Corp area and Pelican Point being the better areas to try. West lakes has bream both north and south ends and near the Bartley Tavern, Mulloway have been caught between the Boulevard and the southern end of the lake. If you’re a real early bird there is some blue crabs moving along the edges during the early mornings.

YORKE PENINSULA
We have additional information coming from the Yorkes from now on. This will be coming from Port Vincent Caravan Park. He will be suppling me fishing info to add to the report so support the caravan park whenever your heading that way and I am sure he will give you up to date info to make your trip even better.

PORT VINCENT
Crabs have been in full swing and bag limits have been coming from Back Beach straight out the front of the caravan park. He will be adding more later.

Whiting are still in good numbers with the winter season being extended yet again. Port Hughes, Balgowan, Port Vic, Hardwick Bay and Edithburgh being the better locations. Snapper catches have been spasmodic apart from the upper Spencer gulf around the Whyalla area but there are small pods off Ardrossan, Port Vincent, Port Broughton and Edithburgh. Squid are still in good numbers at Wool Bay, Stansbury, Port Vincent, Wallaroo, Port Hughes, Hardwick Bay. There has been some salmon around Deadman’s reef out from Port Vic.

One of our Facebookers Mick based at Point Turton and fished there Thursday arvo and Friday morning - water is still a tad dirty but fishable. Did no good during the day but did see some legal sized gar caught. In the evening managed 7 small to medium squid. Started hitting the lures around sunset and action stopped about 2 hours later- then nothing. Friday morning they were back and scored 6 more between 6am and 8am.

Went to Stenhouse bay and fished from 10:30am to 3pm. No activity whatsoever-even the rock cod and leatheries were missing. Water is very cloudy as the sea wall has collapsed and the water is full of what looks like gypsum so went back to Turton. Fished from 6pm to 10pm scoring another 12 squid, couple of nice legal sized salmon trout and a dozen tommies. Chatted to local who said a large school of salmon trout is swimming past the jetty most afternoons and if you are quick enough you should score a couple before they move on.

SOUTH
Salt Creek has some salmon and still a few mulloway is being caught when the weed is not thick. Waitpinga has salmon trout, Rapid Bay has Tommies and squid, Cape Jervis has tommies and some salmon on the western beach. Coorong has been doing well on the soapies along with mullet and a few salmon trout.

FRESHWATER
Water is still running and there has been some callop caught near the locks. Yabbies are still slow but hopefully this will change soon as they expect an increase in water flows soon.
