Port Lincoln fishing report 03/09/2015

bjorn2fish
  • Proper bay has started to see some king George whiting appear along with plenty of squid. Most of the Islands in the Passage have had good numbers of whiting caught over broken ground and the Nannygai, Snapper and Blue Morwong have continued to keep anglers busy over the deep water reefs.

The local jetties and wharf have been quiet, but a good feed of squid is still possible with quality jigs if you fish early or late.

The Salmon Championship in Elliston has finished! The final Fortnightly prize was won by Shaun McCarrick from Whyalla. The mystery weight was 2.875kg and Shaun's Salmon weighed 2.930kg and was caught at Talia. The final fortnight saw a flurry of weigh ins(92), with most of the salmon being caught at Mt Camel and Sheringa with a few fish over 4kg. The overall competition winners will be announced on the 4th of September at 7pm at the Elliston Hotel!

In the picture is local fishing identity Tom Tierney with a nice Murray Cod that he caught on a surface lure on a recent trip to Copeton Dam in northern NSW. The fish went 120cm and weighed 78lbs. A fish of a lifetime, even for Tom!

Now for what was biting and where

Elliston / Sheringa
Salmon up to 4Kg have been caught in the area using lures and bait. Brined pilchards and large metal slugs accounted for most of the bigger fish.

Almonta / Gunyah Beach
A few salmon have been reported along here, but results are still not as good as other beaches for some reason.

Farm Beach
The run of good sized king George whiting continues close in to shore. The northern end up towards Frenchmans has been the pick of the areas, and cockles are the number 1 bait. Berley has been a must to keep the fish around and feeding. Crushed mussel seems to be the number one to try. A few squid have also been caught, so keep a squid jig handy whilst whiting fishing.

Coffin Bay
Inside Coffin Bay, there have been smaller whiting caught along with the usual bycatch. Out in deeper water, the fishing has been excellent with good numbers of Nannygai, Snapper and Blue Morwong caught.

Port Lincoln
Proper bay has started to see some king George whiting appear along with plenty of squid.

Tumby Bay
The group has been hit and miss for some anglers. King George whiting have been patchy, but if you do find them, they should be well above legal. Berley has been the key for the successful anglers.

Port Neill
The jetty/breakwater has seen a few nice Tommies and Squid being caught by anglers.

Arno Bay
The recent run of Snapper seems to have slowed down by all reports, but there are still some nice King George whiting in close.

Cowell
Outside Franklin Harbour has been consistent for squid and whiting while snapper are scarce.
