  • Here is this week's fishing report. Remember, if you have any photo's of that prized catch, just sent them to portlincoln@spotonfishing.com.au with a brief comment.

The Australian Salmon Fishing Championship started this month. Quite a few anglers headed up the west coast to try their luck for a big Salmon over the long weekend. From the reports, a few nice fish have already been weighed in, but don’t forget that there is a mystery weight prize every fortnight.

In the picture, we have a nice bag of Whiting caught in Proper Bay by Dennis Miller and Darren Towers. The biggest one measured 45cm’s.

Now for what was biting and where

Elliston / Sheringa

The first week of the Elliston Salmon competition has produced plenty of interest towards the township and surrounding areas. Rod Elson from Arno bay has collected the first ‘mystery weight’ prize, with his salmon weighing in at 0.74kg, with the mystery weight being 0.561kgs. Most Salmon caught came from Locks well and Talia beach with some big fish being weighed.

Almonta / Gunyah Beach

Mostly small salmon up to 2kg have been caught over the last week by anglers. All methods have been working, but due to the lack of schools, Pilchards seem to be the best bait.

Farm Beach

Boaties fishing out from Farm Beach, and Little Douglass had reported good catches of King George Whiting, and Silver Trevally. The Frenchman area has had reports of bigger King George Whiting throughout deeper drops, with a lot of smaller fish in shallower areas.

Coffin Bay

Big Silver Trevally are being caught throughout most of the oyster leases, along with plenty of legal sized King George Whiting. For boaties heading out offshore Nannygai and Snapper had been a popular target over the past week. Weather conditions did make it difficult for some anglers and charters to venture out past Point Sir Isaac.

Port Lincoln

The main wharf has had reports of heaps of Tommy Roughs, with plenty of Salmon Trout also being caught. The North Shore has had mixed reports of anglers chasing King George Whiting. Some anglers were able to find a feed of medium to large sized fish, with one being reported at 59cm. Please keep in mind that the King George Whiting is known to be spawning over the next few months, so only take what you need, and consider releasing larger fish if they are in a healthy state and especially if they appear to be spawning or have a bulging belly as it is likely for them to be full of roe. Boston Bay has had anglers chasing Garfish with good success throughout calmer weather conditions. Squid or had also been a popular target over the past week with anglers picking up plenty of these cephalopods. You may have to try a few different sizes and colours of squid jags to find one with consistent results.

Tumby Bay

The Sir Joseph Banks Group has had many anglers chasing King George Whiting over the past week. Most reports indicate that fish being caught are of good size, however are not of that ‘fat’ winter whiting the Group is known for.

Port Neill

Squid, Tommies and Garfish have been caught from the jetty when conditions are right

Arno Bay

Snapper tend to have picked up recently with reports coming in from anglers fishing all depths of water. In close sheltered protected areas most reports are of ‘ruggers’ with larger fish coming from deeper offshore drops.
