Port Lincoln fishing report 16/07/2015

bjorn2fish
  • The weather over the past week had not been on an anglers side. Depending what you were targeting, high swell, rough winds, or average tides (and near freezing conditions) made fishing for most anglers very hard or impossible. The fishos who did manage to venture out during breaks through all this were quite successful in finding some good fish.

Now for what was biting and where

Elliston / Sheringa
For anglers chasing Australian Salmon some days were better than others, with rough weather being a problem. Some decent fish were landed, however size was not consistent with Salmon weighing anywhere from 500grams to around 5 kilograms. The bigger fish were caught on pilchards with a few biggies being caught on metal lures.

No other reports came from the area due to poor fishing conditions.

Almonta / Gunyah Beach
Very minimal reports this week, with a few anglers chasing Australian Salmon. Fish averaged around 2 kilograms, and were not in very big schools, and tended to be too far out to cast a metal lure to.

Farm Beach
King George Whiting has been the only species reported this week with some anglers finding some decent numbers, however size was lacking. Fish were averaging around 30cm so most anglers did have to check their size limit.

Coffin Bay
A few Salmon trout and Silver Trevally were caught throughout the bay. The odd King George Whiting was also reported coming from the bay. No reports came from anglers fishing offshore due to poor weather.

Port Lincoln
Australian Salmon are continuing their great run from most surf beaches, with the Lincoln National Park being the most consistent. Schools of fish can be identified along the Sleaford to Wanna coastline and anglers were having best success using metal lures casting at schools along the shoreline. Fish were averaging between 2-3 kilograms. As listed in the ‘Elliston / Sheringa’ section, bigger fish can be caught further up the coast (over 5 kilograms), however, these big fish were not schooling up. Most of the big schools of fish are more around 2-4 kilograms.

Squid remain a popular target for anglers fishing from both shore and boat. Anglers managed to find decent numbers of squid throughout the day and into the night in most of the local bays. A smaller squid jig helped anglers who had difficulty catching squid consistently.

Tumby Bay
Mid sized King George Whiting were reported coming from the Group, along with some drops close to shore.

Port Neill
King George Whiting had been reported by boaties fishing over the ‘northern’ grounds.

The jetty had reports of Tommies, and Squid during calmer conditions.

Arno Bay
Snapper out wide was the only thing reported this week, however anglers had a difficult time fishing through high swell.

Cowell
No reports came through this week.
