Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 06/10/2016

  • Well it looks as though the big storms have passed and Saturday is looking the day to get out on the weekend. I'm heading to Port Victoria as the fish should be on the chew big time.

Metro
During the calmer days (Which was really Saturday before it went sour again) there were still some good catches of King George Whiting off West Beach, Grange, Silt Grounds and a few out near the Black Pole. There was also some whiting in close around St Kilda. Some snapper were on the wrecks down south and the Star had a few snapper as well early in the morning. Squid numbers were down due to the water quality but should pickup this week. Snook are moving into Semaphore and North Haven areas with a few in the deeper waters out from Outer Harbor. Salmon trout are still hanging around with some good catches coming from just outside the Garden Island ramp, there was also some at St Kilda. Outer Harbor breakwater saw a couple of snapper come from the near end and should still do well at night. Bream are slowly picking up with some nice fish caught in the upper reaches of the port from Birkenhead up, West Lakes still has some school mulloway at the southern end and some bream near the Boulevard bridges and near the Bartley Tavern. Crabs are still around and will only improve in the coming month.

Yorke Peninsula
With limited good conditions and most jetties being badly damage there wasn't a lot of news but people still managed to have some sort of a long weekend away with good catches of whiting at Port Hughes, Port Vic, Balgowan, Point Turton, Hardwick Bay, Edithburgh and Stansbury. Small schools of snapper were found out from Ardrossan with some fish going 9 kilo plus.Crabs have started to move in with some good catches from Black Point, Port Vincent and south of Ardrossan. On the other side there are a few crabs at Port Broughton, Wallaroo and Port Hughes. Snook have moved in big time with some nice size fish coming from Port Hughes, Wallaroo and Port Vic. Point Reilly should be worth a try for the snapper during the early mornings and late afternoons. While the snapper are generally slow in the lower Spencer there is still some nice ruggers to be had with the odd big one out from Wallaroo, Port Hughes and out from Balgowan. Chinamans reef is good during the late afternoons. Squid can be found at Pine Point and south of Ardrossan and there are still some nice squid at Stansbury inside the spit and out from the Cemetery. Garfish are starting to show at Port Broughton, Inside the bay at Wallaroo and out at the light at Port Hughes. The Kingfish have been doing well at Port Augusta with some big fish being caught and lost. Be very careful up there at the moment as there is a very aggressive white pointer causing grief.

South
Good news with some nice tommies coming from Rapid Bay and Second Valley. The gummies are also moving into the gulf with some smaller ones being caught off those jetties. Waitpinga beach has some nice salmon near the reef and salmon trout in the gutter near the carpark. Early mornings and at night are best. With this big blow you should also do OK at Cape Jervis for the tommies. Last week I advised someone to don't waste your time to go to Salt Creek, thankfully he ignored my advise (Thankfully) and got a nice mulloway. So get down there as it is looking like another season like last season. Lots of freshwater coming out from the Murray where somehow these fish know it's spawning time.

Freshwater
With the amount of water being released and the amount of water still coming this is going to be a bumper season for Yabbies, Callop and Cod and will also help increase the numbers of silvers and catfish. Try the backwaters for yabbies and the deeper water for callop. Sometimes when the backwaters get quite high the cod move in to spawn. Hopefully the carp are being flushed out to sea for the sharks breakfast. The mouth and Coorong should be very productive as these fish move in to feed and spawn.
