Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 09/09/2015

bjorn2fish
  • At last we have a warmer weekend coming up and with the reports I have got should make it even brighter. Thanks to some of our customers who gave me some extra info. Much appreciated.

METRO
Big garfish have arrived and they are biting well. The fish are out from Semaphore and Bower Road and some came from near the Norma Wreck. Remember to keep your burley trail to a minimum as you don't want to over feed them. Whiting catches have also continued around West Beach, Brighton, Grange and out from Footy Park. Snook have been caught in deeper waters around east of the shipping channel and out from Semaphore. Blue crabs are making their way in with crabs caught around the silt grounds, North of Port Gawler and Semaphore. They are mainly in 6-7 metres of water. Port River and St kilda have nice salmon trout and there are some mulloway hanging around the North Arm. The fish aren't big but they are legal. There is a few big mullet in the creeks but you have to burley heavily. West Lakes has seen some stomper bream being caught near the bridges and south. The Onkaparinga has been doing well on the bream and also salmon trout. Tony Bainbridge has been doing very well there of late. Northern beaches are producing some nice yellowfin whiting along with the odd salmon trout (Thompsons, Webb, etc.).

YORKE PENINSULA
Port Hughes still has some nice whiting but it has been more productive late in the afternoons where fish are coming in between the 42-45cm mark. Squid are still in the area but not in massive numbers like a month or so ago. Signs of big garfish at the light are just starting to show up and should improve as the weather warms up. Some snapper have been caught out from the cape but they haven't been regular. Wallaroo has whiting out from Riley and some small kings have shown up cruising the rocky areas. The jetty is getting better with some squid and a few crabs being caught. Port Broughton has crabs, garfish and still good whiting. Some big salmon trout are in the channel around the straight stretch after the boat ramp. Port Victoria is doing well on whiting and squid. The state offshore championships will be held there this weekend so the boat ramp may be a bit busy. Point Turton is improving every week with some good whiting coming from soutter and a few snapper out wide. Marion Bay has some big squid but can be a bit shy. Trick is to have a teaser and lure them in. In the national park there has been some nice tommies caught in and around the rocks like Roystons and Dolphins beach. Salmon are spasmodic at Browns but is always worth a try late in the afternoons. Edithburgh has a sprinkle of gar in the bay along with squid and whiting in the area. the jetty has tommies and squid. Snapper should pick up with better tides. Stansbury out wide have some nice snapper and squid and tommies are coming from the jetty. Ardrossan has been quite productive of late with some nice snapper coming in. Hopefully there is not enough there for the long liners to return.

SOUTH
Rapid Bay is finally making it's mark again with some nice tommies coming from the jetty along with a few gar in between. Waitpinga is slow but there is a few fish near the reef. Goolwa has seen a few small mulloway and inside the coorong there are mullet and salmon trout. Salt Creek is getting better month by month. Mulloway have been regular visitors but the fish are not huge but still legal. Salmon are still moving through the gutters along with the odd gummy.

FRESHWATER
Lots of people have been doing very well near Blanchetown and Renmark for callop. Other areas are Manuum and Big Bend. Unfortunately you have to work through the carp which are quite large. There are a few rainbows in the upper reaches of the Broughton and also some have been spotted in the upper reaches of the Onkaparinga.

Tight Lines from The Dorsal Fin Team

TIP OF THE WEEK
Now that we are getting into garfish season here is a few tips.

  1. A lot of people just use the normal pencil float. If you want to improve your catch rate try what is called a waggler float. These have the line just on the bottom of the float and they can be very sensitive. They are also easy to adjust your depth and are great for jetty fisherman wanting to cast long distances. They very rarely tangle also. See some in the shop and we can also show you how to use them.
  2. While burley is the key to getting garfish around it can also be your undoing as the fish get full on the burley. Large pellets can help as they steam out slowly but also have a number of rags that have been soaked in tuna oil over night. This creates a nice slick which attracts the fish to the surface.
  3. When you catch a garfish grab it from the beak and run your hand down the fish to remove scales and stuff in it's gut. Don't throw it away, instead get a bit in a bucket and when you have a bit use it as burley and watch the fish really go off.
