Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 10/03/2016

  • Apologies for last weeks fishing report but things were hectic to get the tuition weekend finalised. We had a good number of people last weekend with about 4-5 boats most days. The whole idea was to show people around and how to navigate the area. All did very well and all were pretty confident in what they were doing. Was pretty windy over there but that was good to see how their crafts could manage the area with a bit of nous on where to come back in and out. Thanks to all that came I hope you learnt a few things about the area. Pitty about the weather but there was was fish caught at least. Whiting, Garfish, Huge crabs, some squid, snook and some huge tommies. Unfortunately no legal snapper as we could not get out to the grounds, but they left with a list of GPS spots to try on top of the ones we took them to. Weather is looking much better this weekend (That will be right :() and there is a lot of action to be had.

METRO
Snapper have been doing well in the shipping channel and a few have started out from the Broadway and out pass Clarries. Garfish seem to be a bit more entertaining with some good bags coming in. Whiting are improving and will only get better. Best areas are south of the Black Pole, West Beach and south of Brighton jetty. Squid are doing well at West Beach and further down towards Marino and there are some nice squid just past the Black Pole for some reason. Crabs, well I don't need to say too much as they are coming from the Semaphore jetty and the Largs jetty in good numbers. Grange jetty seems to still have females and smaller crabs. They are even getting good crabs out from West Beach and towards Brighton in the boats. Port river action was slow but if you are wanting to crab off the breakwaters you will get some nice crabs at night. Bream are in good numbers around the wharves and there are some schoolies in the north arm. West Lakes has been doing well on the mulloway with one customer swearing by the new east coast pillies we bring in. Some nice mullet and the odd garfish are being caught also. Off the beaches there is still some nice yellowfin whiting and if you get there early you can also score some nice garfish.

YORKE PENINSULA
Tuna is the talk at the moment with some nice schools smashing the surface around the area of Pondi and Wedge. Reports of fish smashing the surface while bottom bashing has been common. Plenty of nice nannies and the odd moorwong have been caught also. Marion Bay is still doing OK on the whiting along with some nice squid off the jetty. There are signs that the winter whiting are starting to filter through areas at the moment. We had some come in amongst the summer ones while we were out from Port Vic. This is the time where you need to head out to deeper water but in a couple more weeks the fish should move in shallow. We got some nice fish in less than 3 metres of water on Sunday. Wallaroo, Port Hughes, Balgowan, Port Vic, Hardwick, Turton, Edithburgh and north of Black Point are all holding fish. Again crabs are pretty well everywhere from Price to Port Vincent and Port Broughton to Point Turton on the other side. Squid are starting to move up and in the next month and a half they will move up to spawn. Wool Bay is doing well at the moment along with Edithburgh, Port Hughes, Port Vic and Hardwick. The schools out from Vincent are pretty well gone because of YOU KNOW WHO. but there is some fish out from Ardrossan and a very few out on the Orontes.

SOUTH
Victor and the Cape are doing very well on the tuna again. There was a lul for a while but they are definitely back on the chew. Some nice snapper also came from Jervis and Rapid Bay has been producing some squid. Has been a bit quiet at Salt Creek but the reports I got back were the waters did not look good. Inside the Coorong there is still soapies and some mullet.

FRESHWATER
Some nice callop came from Big Bend and just north of Mannum. My friend has been doing well out in Lake Alexandrina as welll well out in the middle.
We have had a new delivery of whole fresh squid for the snapper fisherman and some squid candles for the whiting fisherman (The candles are only $4.00 per pack).
Have a good long weekend this week from The Dorsal Fin Team
