Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 26/08/2015

  • The weather patterns are certainly working towards Spring and this weekend is no exception. Light N/E winds for most of the day.

METRO
Whiting catches are still good south of West Beach. Brighton area and 2-3kms south of brighton in around 6-8 metres of water have been the most productive. Tommies have been scarce this year due to the low water temperatures but in the next month the water temp will increase and hopefully these little bread and butter fish will soon be on the bite. Snook catches improved with some nice snook coming between the shipping channel and silt grounds. Squid are still in good numbers around West Beach, Brighton, Glenelg and Seacliff. A sprinkle of gar are coming from the silt grounds and the Bastard pole along with some nice blue crabs. This should improve in the coming weeks. Snapper are starting to be caught out from Brighton again but at this stage they have been ruggers. Port river is starting to liven up with some nice salmon trout coming from the north arm and around the creek openings towards St Kilda. Bream catches have also improved with some nice specimens coming from the wrecks and the upper reaches near the Birkenhead bridge. School Mulloway have been caught near the Quarentine station and in the north arm near the bridge and also the hot water outlet where someone lost his rod after a big run. West lakes have some huge bream in the upper reaches of the lake with most being caught on fresh frozen bloodworms. Had no reports of mulloway this week.

YORKE PENINSULA
I was over at Port Victoria on the weekend and we found bag limits of whiting just north of Beatrice in 10-11 metres of water. The fish were big up to 48cms. The same area has plenty of squid. Drifting is the best way to get both. Wallaroo, Port Hughes and Balgowan have nice whiting with some snapper out deeper. Hardwick Bay is still firing on the big whiting just north of the town in shallow water. Point Turton has whiting and squid and tommies are on the jetty. Browns Beach was a little slow but the bigger tides and N/E winds is a perfect combination in getting the salmon into the lagoon and around the reef. Out from Pondi and Althorpe have some nice nannies around the shoals and there is still a few sampsons near Wedge. Butlers beach is still producing salmon and salmon trout, Troubridge Point has salmon late afternoons. Edithburgh has been doing well on the jetty with tommies, salmon trout and squid. Out in the boat the whiting have been doing well in the afternoons in the bay and out from Coobowie. Stansbury still has some snapper out wide and squid have moved closer in near the jetty. Ardrossan is slow with the snapper but there is still some nice crabs coming in just south of the town. Whiting have improved across the other side from Price and the creek has some nice salmon trout and a few flathead.

SOUTH
Waitpinga and Parsons beach has salmon with better results late afternoon and into the night. Salt creek has seen a good run of mulloway up to the 10kg range during periods of no weed. Some gummies are also moving into the area. Had a customer who went to Robe and did very well on the whiting.

FRESHWATER
Cobdogla has some nice callop on the other side near the snags. Castles Landing has callop and big carp. Mannum is still producing some nice callop along with some catfish (Which have to be realeased). Murray Bridge has seen an influx of Silver Perch. These fish are fun to catch but again must be released.

TIP OF THE WEEK
When drifting or even when anchored for whiting and you are using a standard patanosta rig clip a squid jag onto your swivel. Squid are often in the same area as whiting due to the type of bottom and the whiting seem to not mine the jag being there. We did this just north of Beatrice last weekend and got some nice squid between catching our bag limit of whiting on the same rig. SO IT WORKS. Give it a try and you will be surprised :)
