Bluegoose 0
GdayI'm looking at purchasing a Hand-held GPS to log fishing spots etcWhat would be the best type to buy under $300Thanks
Boyington214 0
Well, Bluegoose, I use a Garmin GPS 72. Retails for $229.00 and is the High Antenna Sentsitivity version. You will see it retails as the GPS 72H. I have an older model but it works a treat and has marine navaids pre-loaded. It is also reasonably easy to use.I believe that Anglers Choice has these as does BCF.
brenton 637
I have the Lowrance..its good. cheers brenton
Ranger 48
Personally, I haven't seen a bad one yet! All the little handhelds store you marks and put you on the spot every time. Difficult to make a bad choice, so I'd just look at features and ease of operation.
Boyington214 0
I've had my GPS 72 for over 6 years as well. Its also been run over with a boat trailer (with 18ft half cab on it) and only copped a few scratches. Still works perfectly!
Ranger 48
I'm still using a Garmin 12 which some guy on a wooden ark with a big white beard and lots of pets lent to me!
Bluegoose 0
DAMMJust missed out on a Garmin 72 for $100 on EBayCouldnt get a bid offSpewinOh well keep looking
Boyington214 0
GPS 12 is still a great unit, Ranger. A friend of mine uses one of the GPS 12XL versions. Never let us down. So yeah, I guess it comes down to features and ease of use. I just picked up a new etrex for 70 bucks. The only thing I can see it lacks is Marine Navaids. No big deal though. Bluegoose 0
Currently looking at a New Garmin GPSMAP 60CX on Ebay from the US for about $200Apparently can upload and download marks and routes to the computerBut ive just bought a LG540 Mobile and was told you can get an app that might do the trick so now im really confused
Ranger 48
Personally I'd be using a waterproof GPS designed for the purpose, not a mobile phone app.If you get a GPS from the states with mapping, make sure it comes with the Aust map, and remember GPS units also incur an importation tariff in Australia, so add about another 5% to the price (from memory). Bluegoose 0
Apparently it comes with base map but no preloaded mapsHas a 64mg card to store maps etcI don't think maps are a great issue at this stage as all i need is to store fishing spots i know of and new spots i find for future reference
Ranger 48
In that case, with the relatively low cost of handheld units here, I'd look at purchasing just a GPS without maps, and know that I have a warranty which will be honoured in Aust if there's ever a problem with the unit.
