Savagelip 4
What makes them spit the sand, is it lack of oxygen in the sea water? just wondering is it ok to keep them on ice until i get home then purge them in salt water, as i'm a bit dubious as what to do.. quick i'm leaving in 10 minutes lol
Kingsley 19
it's probably too late but...they spit it out because they are sucking in clean water and not sitting in sand.cockles are filter feeders, so they suck in and spit out a lot of water in order to get a feed.they'll also stick their little foot out and move around in the bucket, once you have them in there purging, come back in like 5-10mins and you'll see them all with their siphon things sticking out and moving around etc.so the sand comes out because 1. they are sucking in and spitting out clean water and 2. their shell is open and they are moving around in clean water.I don't bother with ice, just a decent amount of water in an eski to stop them getting too warm, then in a cool place at home with the change over water for purging. Sultana Blue 41
Anyone know where I can buy Cockle Bags - the type you swing over one shoulder to wear in the surf when collecting. They are made of light material and have a couple of drain holes in the bottom to let the water and sand escape. Much better than rolling around in the surf trying to keep a bucket upright. pikk0n 2
I don't have a cockle bag but you can get these nets from kmart for around $6. They're meant to be used to keep your fish in but they worked really well as cockle bags for me.
