Ahoy hoy. As the title suggests Im a beginner at fishing. Grew up on the land and although I did go fishing once or twice when I was little I never really learnt properly.Long story short I'd like to learn so I've been doing a fair bit of reading looking up info talking to some people lately. With that I've got a question..Whats a good rod to get? Im looking at starting pretty basic heading to the jetty to catch squid and maybe head down to the river (Dont live to far from there).Should I buy a basic rod somewhere at a camping/fishing store or head down to a tackle and bait shop and get professional advice? Also what is a reasonable price to spend on it? And what are some decent brands?Any help would be appreciated. Cheers. :fishing: E.

Hi ethanol, welcome to the site. Well what I would do is head to a specialist fishing store like a Tackleworld or a BCF or even better a local tackle shop and talk to them and seek advice on what think you should buy to get started in fishing. I know they are selling Shimano Sonic Pro rods down at BCF for $60. In my eyes, that would be a pretty good beginner rod because of the range of ways you could use it.http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Shimano-Sonic-Pro-Spin-Rod-7-2-4kg-2-Piece.aspx?pid=121786In terms of reels, well I would probably get a Shimano 2500 Sienna. This reel is strong, reliable, versatile and retails for around $60 as well. http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Shimano-Sienna-FD-1000FD.aspx?pid=218585&variant=true#DescriptionWhen it comes to line, you might want to ask about 'braid.' It is well suited to most types of fishing because of its advantages over monofilament line (the more common one). But I'm sure the tackle store owner would be able to work out which type/ strength etc. etc.If you are interested in getting a tackle box going, again I think it would be best to consult someone at a tackle shop. Apart from that, good luck and enjoy this great site.Cheers.

Hey mate I agree head to tackle store, BCF Tackleworld, you should be able to get a good combo for under a $100 shimano, okuma, penn are all good options if you tell them what sort of fishing you are planning on they will be able to guide you. If you are going squidding would strongly suggest you get a white and red jag and a pink one as I have found they are by far the successful colours.
