Last updated: March 12, 2012Driver mystery as car goes under at Murray Mouth, near Goolwa From: AdelaideNow March 12, 2012 12:00AMMan drowns at Murray Mouth inside 4WDPolice officers beside the man's 4WD after it was retrieved from the Murray Mouth. Pic: Michael MilnesA DESPERATE bid by a nearby fisherman to save the life of a man who drove into the Murray Mouth yesterday was foiled by strong currentsWitnesses say the 54-year-old man had been seen fishing out of the rear of his mid-1980s Toyota Land Cruiser and had moved between various locations on the beach as he searched for the best fishing spot.Mystery surrounds how the man and his his vehicle entered the water about 8.30pm.A nearby fisherman, Shane Lindfield from Langhorne Creek, noticed what appeared to be headlights in the water. After alerting other fishermen nearby, Mr Lindfield drove his own vehicle to the water's edge - wrapped a strap around his waste and dived into the water in an attempt to hook a winch cable to the submerged vehicle. But the current was too strong and Mr Lindfield was unable to reach the vehicle. It is understood the currents shifted the submerged vehicle into deeper water, making rescue efforts extremely difficult for emergency services. The vehicle and the body of its occupant was recovered about 3:15am.
