Big red chaser 0
Hi Iam wondering if anyone can give me some advice as to wich is a better reel for my mulloway surf outfit. I am currently undicided between the Saltiga expedition z6500 or Stella's STL series of reels.any advice will be appreciated thanks.
Ranger 48
Gee, you could have a very good reel.......or a very good reel! Both are the ducks guts, so toss a coin, or decide which brand name you have a preference for......how could you go wrong!
plankton 725
Why spend so much on a reel? You could spend a whole lot less and get a really good surf reel, plus have heaps of money left over to buy more fishing gear. I understand paying for quality gear, but those reels are overkill for chasing mullies in the surf imo.

And I would always been paranoid about ruining the insides in the Rough and Tumble of the Surf. How do you think a Stella would go on the FWC being hammered by Sea Spray, Sand etc. Scary! But good luck with your choice ask me. I am going STELLA!!!! (Only beacause I am a Shimano Man.) Big red chaser 0
I also fish for tuna a bit but most times will be mullies and I want a reel that will last. The last 2 penns I have had have let me down.
Shark_Fisho 1
Saltiga all the way.... Caught tuna, sharks you name it on mine. Bullet proof reel! Can't speak highly enough about it! Discovery Journey and Big red chaser
Discovery Journey 0
SALTIGAWould never bother with the rest had some of my best days ever in my life with my saltigatrust it 100% to never ever let me down and it never has.have Caught 60lb Gts 90lb Cod Yellowfin Tuna Sharks Samson Fish you name ithave tested it to its limits and never ever feels weakbest drag going around especially when your fishing your drag at 25kg you will stop most things in your pathi have watched Ifish so many times when paul uses his Stellaand im always laughfing as to the amount of fish he loses yeh he catches a few but loses more.its up to you anglers prefernce people will say they are the same but i can assure you there not found this out when jigging next to a mate using a stella had no control over samson fishat the end of the day you want to catch that big fish of a life time and want everything in your favour to ensure you the most chance of that dream coming true. Nikhum 16
Hey BRC if you havent come across the in depth reviews of the Stella SW and Saltiga 2010 by Alan Hawke then you should definitely give it a good read. Very in depth stuff. But mate you cant go wrong with either IMO.Saltiga 2010 http://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/salt10.htmlStella SW http://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/stlsw.html trihull and Big red chaser
TT 2
I can feel a debate coming on.But really when it comes down to it this is just Holden vs Ford etc. An argue that will simply will come down to opinion and preference not true facts. My only advice is feel both Reels, do your Research and make your own decision. You should decide which will suit you the best. Both have their advantages over the other.Good luck with your choice; either way you will have the best of the best. I am jealous. spinyeel 2
They are both superb pieces of engineering, but using them on Mullies and Snapper is akin to using an Elephant rifle on Rabbits.
aldingabeachfisho 1
I would def go the saltiga. although for a surf reel I would go for something cheaper. the two reels I use for my mullies in the surf are a daiwa windcast and a daiwa saltist. both handle any size mully. I also use the saltist on a monster mesh rod for kingies and tuna from the boat. Big red chaser
__matt__ 0
For what you want it for, out of those two, Saltiga. Simpler main seal on the gear box in the Z series than the Sw's, and simpler drag system that's way quicker to self service after it gets dunked. Very, very hard to beat the Catalina's going around atm though...

Guest
For beach fishing i wouldn't get either as they are way too good for anything you'll encounter in the surf plus the sand could damage them.If you've got your heart set on getting one or the other though then i would get the saltiga 6500 expedition.Anything less than 80lb braid is probably wasted on such a reel though. Ranger 48
As many seem worried about using such a reel from the beach......How about the Saltiga Surf?Cheaper than the standard Saltiga, and especially designed to handle all the beach can throw at it!http://www.daiwa.com/reel/detail.aspx?id=199 statesquider and Big red chaser
Nikhum 16
+1 for Salitga Surf. I'll end up getting one of those as my ultimate surf reel!
fishnfreak 0
+2 for Saltiga Surf I have the 6000. brilliant reel
spinyeel 2
The Saltiga Surf is a lovely reel, but I'll stick with an Alvey for serious bait fishing in the surf.
statesquider 0
I've got a saltiga surf and love it! Quite light for its size too. I can't fault mine but my mates did get a brief dunking the other day and seized almost immediately. But with a quick soak in fresh water it is in the hands of the lads at daiwa getting stripped down and bearings replaced.Great reel though and feels very sturdy, casts brilliantly too.+3 for saltiga surf! smokeykebab 175
i'd prefer a baitrunner for the surf. does the saltiga come in baitrunner form?

statesquider 0
I was very surprised when my mate called me but I'm not quite sure how bad the dunking was. All reports say van staals are THE best thing for surf fishing. If i had the bucks to spend my money would definitely be on that
twinpower 151
i myself are a shimano man but have taking a liking to the bigger egg beaters in the daiwa range. the saltiga surf would be perfect for beach fishing. i myself will be getting one shortly. statesquider
statesquider 0
Yep big fella That is my preference too. Dogfight and a Catalina and everything smaller is a Shimano except my baitcaster also a daiwa. Both mobs make bloody good reels regardless!
Ranger 48
i'd prefer a baitrunner for the surf. does the saltiga come in baitrunner form?Nope! The Saltiga is all about a gutsy reel, with no bells or whistles whatsoever, and as such, nothing to break under extreme pressure. If you want a baitrunner, my own preference is for the Shimano's, but they'll never come close to handling or taking the strain you can put a Saltiga through. In my eyes, prior to these Saltiga and Stella reels, things like sampson, tuna, marlin on a threadline reel were unheard of! spinyeel 2
Guys up North were catching plenty of GTs,Sailfish,Marlin and Dog Tooth Tuna on U.S. made Penn 850SS Spinfishers and Mono line back in the late 70s. B)I'd bet on those same reels still being used today.
statesquider 0
My mate heard back from daiwa about his reel. A quick dunk in the surf has set him back $200...
Ugly4Life 41
Daiwa Windcast Z5500Cheaper, solid, huge line capacity. More than a match for big Mullys or beach Reds.I reckon the Saltiga and Stella are both overkill for surf fishing and if you happen to drop one in the sand by accident you're out of pocket quite a bit. wishing2Bfishing 0
I just bought a Stella 5000 SW and spooled it with 30lb braid, im gunna be using it in 2 weeks when i go on a week long charter around KI. havent tested it yet but im expecting it to be able to handle most of whats on offer bar maybe some XOS Kingies and Sambos so i reckon go for the stella!! Madkeenfisho 0
I own both a saltiga z4500 and a Stella sw 5000 the saltiga is a far heavier reel and feels like its the stronger reel but the 5000sw it's smoother and lighter it is also smaller which I like, suits me better for fishing our gulf.i fish the 4500 at a 24 kg reel and the 5000 as a 15 kg reel .just my opinion both are good
