afishyfish 4
My best guess would be a Gurnard, tho body seems a bit too compact;possibly it was turning away giving that affect ?
Meggs 2
Not a gurnard - just had one on the BBQ. Not too bad to eat - you just have to negotiate the spines when filleting them... afishyfish
archerfish 685
My best guess is a Coleman's Weedfish (Heteroclinus sp. 4). My reference is: p703 "FISHES of Australia's Southern Coast" - edited by Martin Gomon, Dianne Bray and Rudie Kuiter [2008]. An earlier edition of a similar book [1994] tends to support my guess - however, I can't locate any images on the 'net which closely approximate the illustrations in the book(s).Cheersaf afishyfish
Meggs 2
Thanks @archerfishI'll dig out my old copy of "Fishes of South Australia" when I get back from this trip and look that one up.Meggs
piratepom 3,197
Are the colours true in the photo? If not, it looks like a Blue Devil fish, maybe?

Meggs 2
Hi all,Just had some feedback from the Australian Museum. Suggestion is that it could be a juvenile Rainbow Cale (Heteroscarus acroptilus - sometimes called Odax acroptilus). One of my reference books has a picture of this - called a Rainbow Fish). Thanks to all for their input,Meggs
jaffa 81
Hey fella, if the museum reckon that fish is a rainbow cale then they`re having a lend of both of us. Do a google search of rainbow cale, go into the museum`s website & then tell me I`m an idiotic blind old git, coz the fish they have pic`s of is nothing like the one in your pic. Not even close. Cheers.
tonyb 1,017
Go the Red Velvet fish Maybe a juvenile as well??
wazza 0
Meggswould have to agree with piratepom... blue devils, Charters around KI occasionally hook'em, guess some anglers may be wary due to the colour, but they're quite edible.
jaffa 81
Hey ppl, positively/definitely not a blue devil. Cheers.
Buelligan 0
The picture isn't great but I still think it is humble RAINBOW CALE,Ref :- Seafishes of South Australia pg 92 After many years Scuba diving WA and SA , they are very common, and easily recognized
