wishing2Bfishing 0
Hey everyone, i was fishing on the breakwater around Edithburgh boat ramp on Monday and i pulled this up. i caught it on a number 4 hook with a cockle bait on the bottom. i have had a look through my fishing books and the only thing that i think it looks like is a black drummer but according to my book they are only on the east coast so im not sure if that is what it is. i caught a smaller one which i put back so it wasnt just the one that i caught. anyone caught this fish before or recognise it? Bigmac54 0
Quite common in shallow reefy areas. Famously called the Zebra Fish. Close relly to the luderick Gimbles

Bigmac54 0
They don't fight very hard, bit like a leathery, found in the same areas, not a common catch on a hook. Another weed eater, and taste like it too. If you goFor a snorkel around the reefs from aldinga to gull rock you'll see quite a few.
wishing2Bfishing 0
I bet it took some landing :whistle:wasn't too bad, i caught a 37cm whiting about 10 minutes before so that was the highlight. afishyfish

wishing2Bfishing 0
having looked at the link AFF put up its hard to tell the difference, chances are that it is a zebra fish i caught but looking at the photos uploaded by various people the zebra fish seems to have a yellow tail and fins? is it just the photo or is that a common characteristic of the zebra fish? benny 1
had to reply to this topic after not been on for a while haha deffs zebrafish heaps of them at edithburgh darker colour is cos the water at the boat ramp is pretty mucky brown... ok on the chew taste a bit like bream but need to be bled then cleaned asap otherwise youll get a weedy taint in the flesh
red_devil94 4
I'm calling it as a small drummer...http://www.whatfish.com.au/drummer.htm
danielv 8
Do a lot of spearfishing and that is the second most common fish after the silver drummer that I see. Alright to eat but definately not a target species and wouldnt waste a shot on one. Heard people call them zebra fish and ludrick but I reckon its just another type of drummer lol

The yellow tail may be the case when they are in like pristine waters. All the zebras I've hooked at outer harbor have been dark without any flash yellow tail. I.think.the.zebras are really close.relative. Of the drummer (very similar face/mouth). I reckon they go.reasonably hard, like a bream really... My Mrs caught a huuuge one a few years back and it did a little run and really gave her a good little battle.
wishing2Bfishing 0
fair enuf, i kept and bled it, havent eaten it yet but when i do if i like it then if i catch another decent sized one i will keep it and if it tastes like shit i will just it back. thanks for all the help
King Ralph 0
that's a fair call
Kelvin 2,197
Definitely a zebra, you can see the stripes. We only get silver drummer in SA, no black drummer. They are ok to eat but you need to bleed and ice, then when you fillet you need to remove the stomach lining or it taints the flesh. kevilla_the_pomme 0
I cant one of these off the rocks at O'Sullies a couple of weeks ago, went 38cm and fought pretty well, not worth eating though would rather just chuck it back
statesquider 0
As others have said it is definitely a Zebra Fish 'Girella zebra'I see them everywhere when i go spearfishing. Have noticed the fins are not always a bright yellow as shown in most photos. The stripes definitely give it away.
