Alright, I wasn't quite sure where to put this, so it's under general :)ZI know its a legal requirement for boats to carry flares, but surely not for a kayak. However when I get more confident out on the water, I wouldnt having a paddle and getting out to try and find some reefs and snapper spots. BUT, if something was to occur, and I lost my paddle, or capsized or whatever and im stuck, a flare would be really useful. So where can I get them from? And another thing, I heard you had to show proof you had a boating license to buy them nowadays? Is that true? If so, how do I go about getting flares?

I think you only need flares in unprotected waters, Even with a kayak but you would need to be pretty keen to be out there in a kayakNo licence necessary to buy them though, Just wander into the local boating accessory joint and buy them, A little linky for info for youhttp://www.sa.gov.au/upload/franchise/Transport,%20travel%20and%20motoring/Boating/Recreational%20handbook/SAFETY%20EQUIPTMENT.pdfAnd Anotherhttp://www.sa.gov.au/subject/Transport,+travel+and+motoring/Boating+and+marine/Marine+publications/South+Australian+Recreational+Boating+Safety+Handbook

Sorry about the shocking typos in the first one. I'm not talking out kilometres... I mean you can get snapper off the end of the outer harbour wall and wallaroo jetty right? So if i'm out a couple of hundred metres and something happens and need help getting to shore, wouldn't that be the best way to attract attention? Thanks for the links :)

used to sell pen flares in Darwin, just like a plastic trigger the size of a pen that you screw a red flare cartridge onto the end and it shoots a red flare into the air.comes with about 6-8 cartridges from memory.would be very good in a yak as it's very compact.be warned though they go off like a shotgun, very loud :Phttp://www.painswessex.com/products/compact-distress-signal.html

If you're only a coupla hundred metres out, all you would need do is wave your arms to attract attention. You can purchase flares from any marine chandlery, about $60 for a set of four (two red, two smoke).I don't know of any kayakers who carry flares. If you do, just be careful not to set ya kayak on fire with them, and pack them well to keep them dry.
