Yabbies

Hi all. Anyone know if there's yabbies to be had in the Lower Lakes around Goolwa, or do I need to be further up river. Was thinking of having a crack at Goolwa or maybe Milang. Or would I be better off up at Wellington or Murray Bridge or somewhere. Any thoughts?

never found any yabbies down that way, only turtles...reckon further up would be better, but possibly even further than murray bridge. I did however spy some yabbie nets around murray bridge when I was up there on Sunday.Chief & Weaver etc should be able to give you the good word

Had 6 operas in over the christmas break got about 30 / day but all good size ...change your bait often and you can get a good taste.Very slow but operas arent hard workHope you do OK Cheers

G"day Mal b , interesting you asking about the Yabbies down that way.On a Salt Creek trip was having a beer talking to an ex coorong pro at the Policemens point pub.He was telling me that there used to be a thriving commercial fishery for yabbies in the lower lakes, but with high salinity levels , the yabbies dont grow out to a decent size in there anymore,and eventually it wasnt viable.Cheers

Yeah thanks Cal. They really ought to do well in the lakes. Always did well up in Menindee Lakes and Bancannia. May take a while, but it'll be interesting to see if they might come good in the lower lakes now the water has improved.

True Mal, was thinking the same,given that things are apparently on the mend in that area,maybe the yabbies and other critters will make a comeback.
