Langley 30
hi all, just a quick question when puffer fish are around is there no other fish around is it worth fining a new spot???cheersLangley
CallopHunter 1
If there are puffers then you will find it very hard to get a bait past them. There might be your target species sitting among or below them, but the odds are that any bait chucked in will be engulfed by the prolific and annoying puffer! Langley 30
thanks CH is there anyway to detract them or tactics to stop them from engulfing it
CallopHunter 1
Not as far as i know, all i can suggest is move or catch all of them and use them as bait

wishing2Bfishing 0
i threw one back that had died during the unhooking process and it was just floating on the surface next to the boat and a squid surfaced and grabbed it. i was pretty surprised.on a side note, are the puffers we get in south australia poisonous to touch? i have always treated them as poisonous but i dont actually know if they are Langley

Puffer Fish 0
Almost all puffer fish contain tetrodotoxin, a deadly substance that is 1200 times more poisonous than cyanide. :woohoo: wishing2Bfishing and Langley
crispy 2
Rats of the sea best just to move on and try to avoid them. Langley
yorke_angler 0
back in the day at Wallaroo the japanese guys coming off the ships would offer to buy them if we had caught any, of course we never sold them  not poisonous to touch, they're edible if prepared a certain way that remove the toxins but only the japanese are crazy enough to eat them Langley
Wahoo 146
Lately I've been putting the burley pot over the bow or even down the anchor rope to try & get the buggers up front and away from the baits. Seemed to work last trip but can't guarantee it every time CheersWahoo Langley, Damo67 and Savagelip
MistOne 0
Oh Pufferfish...Spent 8 hours off St. Kilda today to receive a never ending battle invasion of Pufferfish. There was KGW around which liked to check the bait out however the Puffers would come over and smash it before the KGW had a chance too.So I think, no this doesnt necessarily mean that if they are around there is no other fish, however if they are around they will get to your bait quicker than any of your target fish. iron chef 721
To beat the puffers you need a pair of pointy nose pliers and a hammer. The pointy nose pliers are used to shake the puffers of your hook once caught and the hammer is used to knock the puffer on the head. Its a case of natural attrician. Persevere long enough and and you will win. crispy
