Open Letter to all Firearm Licence Holders, Shooters & Fishers and Outdoor Enthusiasts in South AustraliaLast year as acting chairman of the Shooters Party SA, I contacted the SA Electoral Commission seeking advice on changing the name from the Shooters Party SA to the new name of the Shooters and Fishers Party SA to bring us under the banner of the Federal Party and start preparing for the election next year. I was contacted (along with all other minor SA registered political parties) in writing of the changes made to the registration of Political Parties in SA as result of amendments made the Electoral Act. Simply put, all political parties are now required to provide evidence that they meet the requirements of registration as a political party annually and if a name change is sought, these provisions also apply. The Shooters Party (SA) was up to then registered but the advice received was that to seek a name change we would have to comply with the new provisions and supply the information required, again. This means that we must submit details of 250 members who are currently enrolled on the SA Electoral Roll to vote and pay the now new “inflated” fee, to be registered as the Shooters and Fishers Party SA.As such, we need to get more members registered to the Shooters and Fishers Party, ASAP.As a Licensed Firearm Owner & Fisher or other Outdoor Recreational enthusiast you are aware that in March 2014 we have our State Election. This is the time (once in every four years) that you can have your say in your future as a South Australian by casting your vote to elect your representatives in both our Houses of Parliament. It an important time that we will determine our future and the way of life we hope for. Your vote is a precious commodity; something most of us consider is the most important thing after our family, our friends, our chosen interests and our rights and implied freedoms. These things we take for granted, that is until the threat to remove them or they are taken from us by Governments changing or making laws through abusing and bypassing of our democratic institutions, our Parliament by enacting Regulations without debate. This four year period is a long time and if things we take for granted appear still there, complacently we vote for the authority we accept or the one that appeals to the ideals that we continue to hope for or strive to achieve. From a Government we elect, we expect it to serve us and foster our ideals and protect those many things we take for granted. As reasonable persons, we do not expect that our Government would take these things from us by arrogance, by deceit, by stealth, by abuse of power or by abrogating it’s responsibilities to other statute authorities or unelected public servants with excessive discretion, without exercising proper and clear oversight and control and a clear regard for the separation of power between the lawmakers and the law enforcers.Governments should not about single issues and as a voter, single issues themselves should not be about Governments, not in a democratic, secular society, based on universal common law, equality and a fair go for all. We should expect that the Government we elect would always consider these principles and implement and protect our statute rights and freedoms, particularly when formulating or changing laws that will affect our livelihoods, our property, our processions and our associations. Sadly, these principles have been eroded over the last four years by our Government and other members of both our Houses of Parliament and our authorities. They have done this by refusing to properly consult and to accept alternatives from those that are the most effected and to exploit these practices to bypass the Parliamentary processes we take for granted and remove these precious freedoms, by deceit and abuse of process by ignoring the separation of power between our democratic institutions and other statute authorities. This has happened with our inner suburban Parklands, our National Parks, our Waterways, our Costal Waters, our local Heritage Buildings, our Judiciary, our Law Enforcement, our freedom to associate with whom we choose and more importantly to us directly, our rights under statute law to possess and use our lawful property, our Firearms and our freedom to associate freely. Sadly, this arrogance is still visible with the most recent decision by the Government to exercise even more constraint in additional new laws targeting ‘serious and organised crime’ but in reality, actually targeting everyone under the guise of being tough on crime.Four times in four years, most recently from January 2012, our (firearms) Laws have been changed by unethical party’s politics, without proper consultation, without proper debate, without Parliamentary oversight and exploited by the very authority tasked with the administering of these laws. This lack of oversight and the granting of excessive use of discretionary powers that bypass our implied rights and freedoms, has removed our ability to seek meaningful redress other than a lengthy and costly process through the Courts that also have been abused by the lack of separation of powers and proper funding, from an elected Government. Sadly, our ability to prevent this from occurring by seeking redress through our Parliamentary House of review, our Legislative Council was blunted in an unethical, unprecedented and deceitful manner, by the government, after undebated Firearms Regulations were specifically disallowed, after our Parliament had risen for the Christmas break, by a Government thirsty for power and arrogant in the manner in which it imposes this, by the proroguing Parliament. This has been done, this is what is continuing to be done, and we are powerless to do anything meaningful about, until we elect our new Parliament. In March 2014 we have an opportunity to correct this. But only you can do so if you value your freedom to enjoy the recreational activities you choose and your statute right to own and use your property and possessions, to freely associate and have a Government that upholds the due process through the democratic institutions we have. Remember, it’s not just about firearms and fishing and the associated outdoor recreational activities, it is about you as a person and our South Australian way of life. Our colleagues in New South Wales, the Shooters and Fishers Party MLC’s Robert Brown and Robert Borsak have achieved this in the NSW Legislative Assembly and recently in Western Australia the same occurred with a Shooters and Fishers Party member, Rick Mazza also being elected. We can do the same.If you are one of the 60,000 + Firearm Licence holders, and the many tens of thousands of Recreational Fishers and Outdoors enthusiasts, your vote can make a difference. Your vote and support of the Shooters and Fishers Party can protect your interests and safeguard the things you value the most, your family, your friends your property and your implied rights and freedoms. Please attend the meeting on the 25th July and join the Party or you can apply for membership by simply logging on to; http://www.shootersandfishers.org.au/news Michael T.
