Ranger 48 Posted November 18, 2008 Report Share Posted November 18, 2008 The Shimano Catana is a cheapish rod which is often sold as a combo with Sienna reels.It'd be fine for plastics, but be wary using these graphite rods on the boat, coz they're pretty fragile, and a knock is enough to snap them or put a stress fracture in them. Ranger 48 Posted November 20, 2008 Report Share Posted November 20, 2008 Mate, I know it aint the same, but I use a Wilson Sovreign 5'6" flickstick with a Shimano Calcutta CT50.It's one of my favourite lil outfits. One I normally dont leave home without, and one I've really thrashed out on many species from Whiting through Snapper, rays and couta.Guaranteed you'll love the rod! FushLups 0 Posted November 20, 2008 Author Report Share Posted November 20, 2008 The rod feels so different to my current starlo stix light spin which is matched to my symetre 2500 and 4lb & 6lb fireline.Gives me a bit of diversity for flicking plastics, smaller reel, lighter rod, but still plenty of guts, and obviously the price of the reel makes it easier to bang around in the boat with, also it will take a few knocks as opposed to my other starlo which would probably snap!Good to hear youlike it Ranger Can't wait to get it now, the mrs has stolen it to give for my christmas present Quote Link to post Share on other sites
FushLups 0 Posted November 23, 2008 Author Report Share Posted November 23, 2008 I'm thinking of spooling my reel with 4lb fireline, not sure how much to buy 150 or 300 yards....The spool doesn't give distance to diametre so I'm a bit stuck. brenton 637 Posted November 23, 2008 Report Share Posted November 23, 2008 I just buy the 125 metre spool myself and have never had a problem.The only difficulty is spooling up,i put the fireline on first then the backing so i get it all on and then i wind it off onto a handline then another then back onto the spool.It sounds like a lot of mucking around unless i guess and that never comes out right. cheers brenton Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Big Ian 0 Posted December 17, 2008 Report Share Posted December 17, 2008 you can get away without the backing if you put some electrical insulation tape on the spool, the braid digs into the tape and stops the braid spinning on the spool.In effect the same as a mono backing does.
