plankton 725
Took a chance on a cheaply priced surf rod and was pleasantly surprised. It's a Saratoga Custom Predator Overhead, 13' glass/carbon composite and rated to throw up to 225g. It comes with knock-off fuji guides and reel seat that seem decent enough. The place that sells them is called Tacklemania, but I got mine from their ebay store, shipped to my door for less than $40.I know $40 for a rod makes people think it will sh!t itself the first time you cast, but the thing is a beast and will handle a 6oz sinker and a big bait no problem. Being a composite the butt is still a bit thicker than I'd like, especially using an overhead, but it's still better than those impossibly large, all fiberglass rods. It also comes in a version wrapped for threadline use.I haven't actually fished with it yet, but it certainly feels like it will do the job down at Salt Creek or elsewhere. In a marketplace that seems to lack a good selection of heavy surf rods, especially overhead models, it is well worth a look, IMO. They also sell an all carbon rod rated for the same weight for a little over $100, may have to give that one a go as well.
