Oldmate 46
Do fish caught on a fly rod with a baited hook still count as fly fished? Just wondering cos had a good day on the tommies they would only take live gents not the little gent flys I pre tied. If it counts then these would be my first fish on a fly rod? Would post photo but can't work out how?
sbarnden 397
Some people would burn you at the stake for that kind of heresy :-) Personally I don't think it really counts as fly fishing since the point is not just the method of casting but also being able to trick the fish with the artificial offering by matching the hatch. But fly fishing it being moved in all sorts of different directions these days with people pushing the boundaries. Have you got any pictures of your gent flies and method used to tie them? I haven't tied any myself but I saw a really realistic imitation pattern by using the round rolled edge of those disposable latex gloves that produces a nice soft, segmented body. For adding pictures: http://www.strikehook.com/index.php/topic/25145-attaching-and-inserting-photos-and-files-on-a-pc/ Still a good technique for free-lining baits for spooky fish though even though its not 'purist'
Oldmate 46
If this works this is the gent fly I tied, it's just a heap of cotton thead on a #16 hook it was something I come up with one night spare of the moment thing my fly tying is a bit ruff but I'm learning
plankton 725
Who cares? You went out, caught some fish, had a good time and used your fly rod. As far as I'm concerned you can call it whatever you like. arpie12008 and reelfun

sbarnden 397
Here's a quick photo from my mobile of the Grub fly I was talking about. Looks pretty simple to tie and the latex gloves are cheap and easy to get. Station49 33
Sounds more like bait fishing than fly fishing since you did not actually catch fish on a 'fly'.

sbarnden 397
Nice fish! Now all you need to do is catch one on a dry fly during a mayfly hatch on a chalk stream while wearing tweed, as the purists would say What type of fly did you use for that one? arpie12008
