newtontoney 57
Anyone use wind on leader when using there overhead reels for surf casing ? apparently it can act as a shock absorber and help to achieve long distance casts with decent sized lures without crack offs. Cal 480
Yeah NT definately advise one if using OH and fast taper rods,a rule of thumb is use 3x the breaking strain of your main line,ie 20lb main line = 60lb shock leader. As for braid, we know braid is way thinner than mono for given breaking strain,50lb/60lb is a pretty good allround for any strength when using it for most breaking strains. Cheers. newtontoney
plankton 725
I use a shock leader when casting sinkers 3oz and up. Usually 50lb with at least six turns around the spool when casting. I attach it to my mainline with a slim beauty knot. newtontoney
Hugo 120
Haven't tried a wind on, but have been using an FG knot for several seasons without issue on my Abu7000 and Calcutta 700. I have 20lb on the Abu and 30lb braid on the Calcutta and run 60lb Jinkai leader for both lure and bait fishing. brenton, Cal and newtontoney
newtontoney 57
It Definitely makes a difference....tried 60lb wind-on on the abu over the oval and can comfortably hit the 90 + meter mark with no crack offs. Practiced my casting a fair bit also though but wind on definitely helps prevent crack offs with light mono main line
