Went fishing with a older guy I know around the Pirie area years ago and as people know in this area the boat tends to sway side to side even in light winds, well when we got there he dropped a hunk of railway iron over the side ( about 700 mm long ) and tied it to the back of the boat and the boat never moved a inch. Works good with winds up to 25 knots.

Then he got out a piece of 100 mil down pipe out that had clear hard plastic on one end put it over the side and said ‘have a look’ low and be hold you could see the bottom must have been 10 meters down, you could see the school of fish down there.

Anyone else got any ‘ old man ‘tips they would like to share? would be great to read them.

When youre  coming  back from fishing in your boat, slow right down and throw your anchor rope over the side of the boat.  The wave action will take any kinks out of the anchor rope and soften it. The old guys in their putt putts would do this religiously.

If you have a couple of long  necks that you want to cool down to drinking temperature wrap them in a wet sack and tie them onto your roof racks. after 20 kms. they are cold enough to drink.I

If you dont have roof racks wrap then in a wet sack and stand them in the shade. This is known as Bookabie temp. The second one will taste better than the first :P

Soak your cuttyhunk line in pitch before using.

40 pound line is fine for handlining whiting.

Soak your catgut in a bucket of water before a days fishing to soften the line.

Leave your squid out in the sun for four of five days till it turns red and is now perfect for snapper bait.

Always keep a flagon of plonk in your boat.

Alvey centrepins are the best reels on the market.

Always carry a spare magneto in your boat.

You can't eat squid.. it's bait.
