Buggered Carp

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

With uni and working two jobs, fishing time has been very limited but I managed to get out for a quick fish after work today. Took the fly rod down to the Torrens along with a light spin rod and a bag of bread for backup. I drove for a while along the river and just picked a random spot for a look. Well I found a really shallow bit stacked with lots of good sized carp! Perfect fly casting territory. In the 90 minutes I fished, I landed three good carp, two on fly and one on bread. Sizes ranged from 3.62 to 4.85kg. Heaviest fish was taken on bread on the bottom but the ones on fly were way more satisfying.

nice work mate... do you think a bread fly, tied to some light fluro would work on spin gear?? wouldn't mind getting my trout outfit out and chasing some mudmarlin.

I threw out some bread on the top first and they were eating every piece of it. You could chuck out the fly on spin gear or you could put a hook though a piece of bread as well and make it float on the top

I'm not Kuerschie, but personally I've got carp on some really dodgy bread flies using a handline. Sometimes a slow sinking fly will catch fish when an outright floating fly won't. This was on a boat so casting distance didn't really matter. I'm sure you could do similar with light spin gear.

I made some homemade "Bread flies" made from both Styrofoam and sponge.... Ive noticed, especially when Kuerschie and I fish and we throw bread out for burley the carp go Straight for the Larger pieces of bread floating on the water, so i made my flies alot larger then conventional bread flies would be.

So being bigger flies, I have been able to also cast them a fair distance with my spin gear! I haven't been able to fool one yet on em, but I haven't really put time and effort in trying!
