Wolfeeeyyy 0
Hey guys! This is my first post here and I've just got a quick few questions! (still a bit of a beginner at fishing for anything other than little fish!) I recently bought an overheard rod and reel combo and I've put 40lb line should that be enough for sting rays and anything else that wants to take my bait off of a jetty? Is there any restrictions on using wire traces on the Yorke Peninsula? Regards, Wolfeeeyyy
smokeykebab 175
Won't need wire for rays. 60lb mono leader is plenty. You can use wire on yorkes at anytime. I think 2mm wire is the limit still their. Google pirsa sharking regulations.
Wolfeeeyyy 0
Thanks mate! I'm heading up their tomorrow for 4 days so hopefully I can give my new rod a work out!
plankton 725
Here's the link, http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/fishing/fishwatch/sharks/fishing_restrictions_for_sharks Like smokey said though, no need for wire on rays.
Wolfeeeyyy 0
Thanks, Plankton Does anyone have any suggestions bait wise for stingrays?
smokeykebab 175
St mullet tommy fillets or squid on the bottom you'll get a ray for sure.
Wolfeeeyyy 0
Thanks mate, I'm fishing wallaroo for a few days so I'll try tommies and squid, if I get anything I'll be sure to throw up some pictures!
Rybak 622
Generally any large (fish) dead bait will work. Snook fillets are good as well. I reckon the oilier fish are better.
AquaticResearch1 1,046
Are rays still a consistent presence in winter? Only started chasing them last summer but if I could potentially lock horns with 'em in winter I'd be open to that.
Scissors 308
Pretty sure Wallaroo jetty is closed at the moment?
Wolfeeeyyy 0
Yes! It was quite an unpleasant suprise when I rocked up with all my gear and the security guard told me I couldn't get on it. Going to check out moonta bay or port Hughes tomorrow, any idea which one might be better?

Wolfeeeyyy 0
I have seen some big ones at stansbury, I don't think I have enough experience or gear to tackle them though!
Wolfeeeyyy 0
Also a quick question, is a gimbal necessary?
smokeykebab 175
Gimble isn't necessary. Does help though. Thats a 4 or 5000 salina 300m of 20lb in the vid spooled in only a few mins. I only use spin gear and haven't been spooled but i run 50 or 65lb braid. Your overhead will handle most rays with ease.
AquaticResearch1 1,046
Stansbury on an incoming is great in the summer months at least mate. I like the sand patch cause you see them but have hooked them all along the jetty itself
Wolfeeeyyy 0
Thank you to everyone who has commented so far all of it is greatly appreciated!
Scissors 308
Try off the rocks near the Wallaroo jetty, usually you see a ray or two cruising in the shallows, not that big though but will give you a little bit of fun.
Guest
Bit of a waste of a ray but if you are keen smoked ray flaps are damm tasty.
Wolfeeeyyy 0
If I finally manage to catch one it'll be a catch and release. Just want something that will fight rTher than just a little tommy @Scissors what rocks do you mean mate? If I was at the start of the jetty facing towards the sea would it be left or right? Scissors 308
How did you go?
Wolfeeeyyy 0
Terrible! we went up to port broughton for the last day and their was some quite large fiddler rays swimming about in the shallows but they weren't interested in my bait in the slightest
AquaticResearch1 1,046
Geez that's no good mate. I've only done this in summer, but If you're after rays, go to the end of Stansbury jetty in the run in, chuck a few chopped up fish frames around the sand hole and burley for gar. Catch gar and have your ray bait in plain sight, see ray glide over and start munching on it, strike, game on. We once had >6 rays cruising around the end there
Scissors 308
That sucks, usually the fiddlers go straight for your baits, but they don't fight very well. Haven't seen any for a while but there were some absolutely monster stingrays at Port Broughton, you would have little chance of landing them though, just too powerful. Better luck next time
