Vic Fisheries video - illegal sanctuary fishing.

Recommended Posts

We fish near that area and the Shenanigans that go on there are ridiculous.

The fact the charter boat operators go into the park, is a very odd choice for a business to make.

And the lack of anchoring etiquette that goes on in close would blow some peoples minds.

Guys putting fenders out so they dont bump into the 200 other blokes anchored on top of each other. It has to be seen to be believed.

But the guys legally anchored right on the edge of the park do catch more fish than guys 20 metres away. Especially as the snapper move onto the shallow reefs to feed at dusk.

We've anchored legally right on the edge - and the procession of big fish streaming by on the sounder, is like watching a video game - theres a current that runs along the edge of the park that acts like a snapper super highway😉

So the urge to sneak into the park is high - but so are the fines - and there is an active local group of "friends of the sanctuary" only too happy to make the call

I imagine there are a few calls made from people legally anchored, who get jealous of all the fish the illegals are catching, aswell😉

That is certainly a crazy spot , but obviously a very good area for fishing.

But the amount of boats in the sanctuary is amazing considering the fines if they are caught - it's obvious the area doesn't get patrolled too often for them to continually go in to the sanctuary.

But like anywhere, people will make the call to fisheries but unless they have the manpower, they can't be everywhere all the time - but saying that, you'd think that area would be patrolled quite often.

Yeah they are spread pretty thin. We have never been stopped by fisheries out in the bay.

Plenty of encounters with the water police.

When we used to go bream fishing in winter the cops would safety check us nearly every weekend in the Yarra. (It was close to their home base and there were often no boats to hassle out in the bay on a windy winters day)

but Fisheries are rarely seen out on the bay

this isnt as crazy as it gets but it will give you an Idea of the anchoring etiquette -

When the wind gets up, boats start swinging and anchors start slipping - it gets mental

You only have to experience all the yelling and mayhem once, to know whether its for you or not😉

oh hell!! That is way worse than the 40 boats on the mackerel spot I fish!! What if a snapper runs around someone's anchor rope or someone else's line? They look closer than the run a big snapper can make in 4 metre of water!!

Yeah its genuine insanity - being in only 4m, fish dont have far to run down, before they start heading side ways.

You can hear the polite-ish exchange between the boats as the kids fish runs into another guys line - and I imagine there is an understanding between the boats, that they are fishing in very unusual circumstances.

But you can imagine it wouldnt always be that polite,  when the adrenaline is pumping and 2 full grown meat heads are arguing over a fish.

We fished the area once - and that was enough - the potential for madness was too high. We only saw some minor flare ups, as the fish werent bighting that hard. But there is tension in the air😉
